bbatman99
I'm thinking of getting a frag rack since the snails keep knocking over my starter corals. Does anyone use these mag-racks? I was curious how well they work. Maybe someone local makes something similar? I like the black ones as I think it would look better since it would be in the main display. http://www.mag-racks.com/index.htm I'm open to any other ideas as well. (rock2) Thanks, Brad
Algae
I've got two of the larger frag racks from Mag-Racks (as per link). The thing I don't like about the larger one is that it is three magnets making it harder to adjust for light and to clean. No to much of an issue if you place it on the back glass. Here is a link an even larger rack (and cheaper). It is kinda of a shade tree thing, but not bad and does the job well. I have one and like it. http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42702 None of this is rocket science and you could bang one out yourself IF you have the time. Rick
Saltwater Fanta-Seas has a rack something like the one in the link. I've made a couple of racks myself from egg crate and then either hung them from the top (first pic) or stood them up against the back wall (second pic). (Maybe these will give you some ideas for your own) The racks will keep hermit crabs off them as long as there are no rocks for them to climb up (they can get on the one in the second pic) but it will not keep snails off them. I've still had corals knocked off both racks by snails and with the first one that was hung from the top I have a Jewel Damsel that would pick the frags up and pull them off the rack (It does the same thing if I leave one loose on top of a rock). impur
Lots of people here in the club have made them. They are much cheaper to make http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10665 http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10106 http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=9759 I bought some magnets, acrylic resin, and eggcrate and made my own. You could make probably 10 racks for around 20-30 bucks.
bbatman99
Thanks for the input. I think all this DIY would require I be handy with tools...DOH!
impur
Side cutters is the only tool i used. Used it to cut the eggcrate. Oh and i used a wooden skewer too, if thats a tool The rest is really really simple. Acrylic resin, dixi cup, mixing cup for the resin and magnets. A little resin in the dixi cup, allow to harden slightly. Drop in magnets (the middle thing is for a pump mount but later turned into a frag rack) Make 2 of these, one goes in the tank the other on the outside. Once they are dry glue eggcrate to one and you are done. But it sounds like you really want to buy them. Either way enjoy!
Nyles
And some people just dump them at your house and never come get them again... LOL Lots of people here in the club have made them. They are much cheaper to make I bought some magnets, acrylic resin, and eggcrate and made my own. You could make probably 10 racks for around 20-30 bucks. bbatman99
Thanks Jon. Do people find their frags grow better than being constantly knocked around when not on a rack? I saw one of my emeralds glowing last night because he was up to no good. Multiple times I've caught hermit crabs on the zoos. If only the frag racks had a snail deterrent...that would be ideal. chewie
I use an eggcrate rack that is DIY but the same as the ones pictured. I also use the ceramic reef plugs which are the same shape as the ones above. They don't go anywhere. In fact, I put 2-3 snails on the rock every few days to keep up on algae, and everything it pretty much secured. Either way, DIY or the ones pictured make it MUCH easier to keep frags. kilmca
Here is one of my frag racks. Made this using a mangrove algae magnet that I got with a craigslist tank buy. I already had a magnet cleaner so I made a frag rack out of it. When i made the rack i didn't realize the algae magnet cost around $120 but I know why, it's really strong. I could have made the rack larger but i didn't have the space.
siskiou
After diy-ing for quite a while, and ending up with magnets that were too weak etc., I broke down and got two racks like the one posted by Waves. They are great! Easy to move around (I have the two magnet versions). My frags still sometimes get knocked off when one of the larger snails goes to town on the racks, though. bbatman99
I'm not a diy'er so I'll be picking up the frag rack. Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated.
