Hmm, I guess the mystery persists, then. I cleaned out the barrel again yesterday, ran new RODI water, and added salt. I'll test it when I get home. I also ordered a new chloramines block because I figure it can't hurt! Gillian

Aha. I didn't know it was a delayed release of ammonia! That makes sense. I bet our chloramine filter needs replacing. Thanks! Gillian

Our RODI is the 5 stage BRS unit with a chloramine filter.m If it were chloramines, wouldn't the ammonia show up right away? Fresh out of the RODI, we get zero TDS and zero ammonia. Mthe ammonia only shows up after a few days in the storage barrel. So, can plastic leach ammonia? Thanks, Gillian

I think we are getting ammonia leaching out of our barrels. We have two 33G barrels, one for RODI water and one for mixing saltwater. They are rubbermaid Brute barrels, and we've had them for a few months. We run the RODI into the first barrel, and use this for topping off. When we need to make saltwater, we transfer the RODI water from barrel #1 onto barrel #2, and add salt. There's a powerhead and a heater in that bucket. The water coming out of the RODI has zero tds, and no ammonia. After a few days in bucket #1, we are measuring some ammonia, and the saltwater bucket has nitrates/nitrites, but no ammonia. I presume it's cycling. What the heck is going on? We have rinsed out the buckets and wiped them down, and the problem came back a second time. What are the rest of you using for water storage/mixing? Thanks, Gillian

I had a gbta that was doing great until my clowns started hosting it. I think they were just too rough. Maybe I need to start with a bigger one? This one was about 5 inches when extended. The clowns are just a big pair of false percs. I'd like to try again if anyone is looking to part with a split of something tough. Thanks, Gillian

I actually like this stuff, but I do keep it to one or two spots in my tank. I'll be pulling some out this weekend, if anyone wants some. Shoot me a PM if you'd like a piece. We're in close-in NE PDX.

Sold it when we took the tank down. :(

We are planning on setting up our solana again, and are thinking about lighting options. This will be fish only, or fish + zoas and other low light corals. Since the tank will be in a very visible spot, I'd like the fixture to be attractive. We are open to HQI, T5s, or LEDs. What fixture would you pick for a 34g cube? Does anyone still have the old Solana disco balls? Those were kind of interesting looking. What else is out there? Another option would be to do a DIY led fixture and camouflage it somehow. Seen anything creative lately? Thanks for the ideas! Gillian

We are getting ready to set up our Solana again, and our old stand is looking a bit shabby. I'd love to find something more attractive to replace it with. Anyone looking to sell a stand for a 20" cube tank? Thanks! Gillian

I noticed that my birdsnest was looking off today, and went to investigate. Found the problem pretty quickly when I opened my barrel of RODI water, and it smelled like cat pee. I had noticed that the lid was off the barrel the other day but didn't give it another thought. Yes, I have been topping off with ammonia water all week, since apparently the cat peed in the barrel. Go figure. I tested the water in the barrel, and it turned green- 1 ppm. The saltwater barrel tested ok, but I am going to run nitrite and nitrate tests too, just in case there are bacteria in the barrel that are converting the ammonia. Is there no end to the stupid things that can go wrong in this hobby??? Gillian

I'm not great at posting photos, but let's see if this works. Here's a shot of the 5 or 6 largish pieces. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u474/gilliroo/photo2-2.jpg

Oh, awesome! I'm looking for zoas, acans, lps, hardy sps, pretty much anything that's brightly colored. I have a lot of room to fill up. I'll try to take some pictures of the larger pieces this evening. Pm me if you would like to come have a look. We are in close in NE PDX. Gillian

We took down a tank and then re-aquascaped our main tank, and now we have a lot of live rock left over that we no longer need. We have a few large, interesting pieces, some base rock, and some smaller pieces. No aiptasia. Happy to trade for frags, other livestock, etc. open to suggestions. Thanks, Gillian NE PDX

I'm just out of practice with the forum posts, LOL. It told me I was 10 characters too short for a post, which seemed a little fishy, har har. Guess it was just messing with me! -

Love the new tank set-up! Those clowns are cute! How many anemone varieties do you have in there now? Are they staying put? G -

Ah, I see that only the shrimp, crabs, and pods are at risk. And the worm(s).
