  1. I want to interject another issue into the mix, noise. I found that after I moved my tank into my new house with fresh hardwoods, I found my gen-x external pumps made noise a really inexcusable annoyance. That said, you want to insulate as much as you can under the tank. I used camping-based sleeping foam under my tank, and this worked well as a gasket. 6 months later I pulled the tank out and found the newly finished floors to be as good as the day the tank was layed down. Still, this was not enough to curtail the vibration that passed through to the floor and made so much noise. I'd suggest that you consider using multiple pads of differing material, one for water seepage, another for noise reduction.
  2. You go on with your bad self, Rich!
  3. I had a peacock for a time. No pics of his tank, but I'll give you the parameters for the low maitenance regimen I kept. 29g acrylic tank was selected after he broke the bottom of the 20L glass tank I bought for him. 20lbs live rock and macroalgae. Tons of rubble and a 4inch crushed coral substrate. Lit with a NO bulb. Hang on CPR knock off skimmer with bio bale. Bi-monthly water changes with recycled water from my reef tank's water changes. A choc-chip star, damsel and dwarf lion as tankmates. He never killed them. He did however, kill many hermets, astrea snails and hitchhiker crabs. This was kept going for 6 months and worked really well, almost maitenance free. Never cleaned it, just water changes. Krill was a substitute food for the expense of entertainment coming in the form of live feedings. Eventually the girlfriend got sick of a second tank and had me make a decision. Sold him back to LFS, no worse for wear. HTH... BTW, nice avatar, Ron.

  5. Lettuce nudibranchs did the trick for me when I had the same issue.
  6. Anyone use one of those nano "fission" skimmers? They looked really... um.... cheesey, but they may perform, I dunno. Give this guy a heads up!!!
  7. Yeah, we (the US) are missing out on the Kyoto protocol, which drives co2 down.
  8. Here is what actual data suggests. You'll just have to trust me, Rich. So imagine it's not your cars tailpipe, but the collective emissions of all our tailpipes and the billions of metric tons of CO2 from industrial pollution that has grown exponentially since the dawn of the industrial ago over the last 150 years. It's a function of the population and economic growth. Then take into account all the destruction of the forests (don't discount the burning of them to clear land either) that would have removed the CO2 from our atmosphere and we start to arrive at a place that in Reefworld would would call "accumulated detritus". The solution here is that as reef keepers, we perform water changes. There just ain't no RO/DI for our atmosphere.
  9. I have to disagree with some of these statements. I don't think that the Iraqi people are "better off" without Saddam. That's a big statement, I realize, but my logic is this: We've done worse things for these people by making their country more unstable and contributed to more death and destruction by removing Saddam. Ever notice that we don't report on the numbers of civilian death in Iraq since our occupation? I have heard numbers that approach 100k, and I am not going to research this, but there are other ramifications of this war that are not being reported on. Humanitarian issues are a byproduct that comes to mind. How many people die simply because the instability of this country, due in part to our occupation, contributes to the supply of necessary medicine and potable drinking water, for instance (my sociology classes are talking here). Further, we have concentrated our efforts on terrorism in Iraq, where other obvious state supporters of terrorism (Syria, who harbors Hamas leaders for starters) are left alone. The idea that we would destabilize the Taliban in Afganistan to root out Osama is a similar arguement to the one I am making. So was Iraq a good target? I say no. I am going to further critisize the Fox news and the Rupert Murdoch reports on WMD's. I read them and don't feel that the credibility of these reports are sufficient to support claims of WMD's. This was such a small blip on the radar of rationality, that there must be a reason that these are not being cited a credibile threat. The Iraq rationality for WMD's was yellowcake (nuclear materials) coming from Niger, not degrated nerve gasses from the pre gulf war. This has been determined to be an exaggeration of poor intelligence due in part to spin from Cheney, not based in fact whatsoever. Back to global warming... I saw the film, and I am a born sceptic. But here's the facts: The last 10 years have had the highest concentration of the hottest years on record. This cannot be disputed. There is a coorelation between co2 levels and warming global temps. This cannot be disputed. We have higher levels of co2 in our atmosphere than at any time on this planet. This cannot be disputed. What's the problem in recognizing this?
  10. That's cause he doesn't need a bottle opener.
  11. What were the duck colors when I left Oregon... it was like the first year that they did the Thunder Yellow and still kept the old green. Sometimes I wished the Lillis Business Marketing school would be consulted before someone goes out on a limb and uses thunder yellow. BTW, those zoo's are pretty [language filter] close. Good call on the title. Go Ducks.
  12. I concur. Perhaps start with less co2, tho. A bubble every two secs and test your tank until you get to the desired alk and calc levels. I liked high alk and lower calc (well, if you consider 400 low). You just got to set it and check it. And do it again.
  13. I just wanted to kill the buzz of ripping on those less fortunate than us. And meth addicts. But they deserve to be ripped on. Tweakers!
  14. This is excellent! I can't believe the current administration went for it. Must be no oil there. But than again, an act of congress would allow drilling there too!
