Mr S
Is it just my district or is the site blocked at other school districts? Just curious. I can not access at school. We are blocked of any type of forums, etc. And no, it is not just my computer(plotting)
dsoz
I can get to it if I am logged on as a teacher. If I use a student computer, or log on with a generic account than it blocks it because it is "pets" related. So sorry Rodger. It seems schools are cracking down more and more on internet use. dsoz
Mr S
It sucks since this is a valuable source of info for my students besides the ability for students to ask questions to the experts located here.
CA2OR
You are probably going to have to bring this up with your IT or Network admin
Mr S
I have. I have to seek board approval to have a site accessable. It is kind of like asking for money to support my school tanks (not)
CA2OR
and explaining the benefit and resource it provides doesn't help?
tidalsculpin
This is the main reason I started the wiki. I have to say, I don't really want kids joining the pnwmas site but I would like them to view some of the threads. Wikispaces is a commonly accepted educational tool. There are well over 150000 wiki sites for educational purposes. Also, it has forum like ability. Students in 4j can have access to it and it is commonly accepted in many schools as "safe."
CA2OR
that may be a good option right there. Nice input tidalsculpin
reefboy
yea I can totaly unerstand blocking these sites wasnt just yesterday a spamer came into a reef site I sponsor posting porn links and it was only for a few minutes before a mod deleted them but long enough plenty could have seen it as they went through each forum and posted so it took them abit to delete all the post's. these open forums are fair game for spamers at the moment.
Mr S
Joel, I could not even open your wiki email to me at school today. Will open it tonight since I am at home.
tidalsculpin
That is pretty disappointing. Perhaps you can show the tech office that it is an educational site only. They can unblock sites quite easily at the district office with the filter software we use. Our software package for filtering is called something like ae6 filtering. It was quite restrictive in September. Then, teachers put in requests for specific sites and the ban was lifted for these sites. Many forums if not all are still blocked. The wiki never was. It is a shame if your district will not even listen to it's own teachers about what they need to access to teach educational content. The sexiest thing you might run into when studying corals is a spawning event. lol.
Rob Allen
This problem is unfortunate, but if you show detail to the board/IT Staff about the educational benefit and that PNWMAS also works with teachers (Tanks for Teachers) to show that we are a non-profit dontaing organization helping education, they should be good with allowing the site. Mr S
Been trying to do this for years. The new one is to try and get a bypass code to access the site. Been waiting for that since September. (WHATEVER)
Barelycuda
Sorry to hear of the problem Roger. Sounds like a person or two needs a slapping up sid the head.... Also try to tell them to try to work without using the phone or email for a day and see how productive that is These sites play just as much of a role for the tank as any other part of the program.
