Throw your vinegar away!

Recommended Posts

So as you may or may not know, using vinegar to clean your plastic parts can leach through the plastic and eventually make your magnetic swell.

Also, vinegar smells like vinegar.

Saw a post about using citric acid and gave it a try.. works great and no smell!!

A 5lb bag of pure food grade citric acid is about $10 on amazon. Mix 3/4 cup in a gallon of water... now you have a gallon of vinegar equivalent.

So $10 will make about 8-10 gallons of solution.

Pretty slick.. and you can also make our own bath bombs, sour patch kids, and descale your coffee maker.

:)

That alone is reason enough in my book!  Interesting about the differential sensitivity to acetic vs citric acid.

Do you have a link or a specific brand?  When I search on Amazon the best I can find is about $15 for 10lbs.

Good to now know! I’ve been using vinegar since I started reefing but luckily never ruined anything. Gonna make the switch!

I haven't clicked the link but I have heard this before about mp40 pumps and vinegar. From what I remember other brands were fine being cleaned with vinegar (correct me if I'm wrong). That being said if the acid is cheaper I'm in!

I just heard about this so It's interesting timing to see it here too. I think word is getting around. Sounds like there are some sad people who damaged their Vortech MPs.

I just switched too! That might explain all those swollen magnets back in the day from some of my return pumps. I bought the brs stuff, so good to hear it’s all pretty much the same

[language filter], those look like the real deal. My grandma made the best pickles and I’ve never had anything close since from a store

I actually would like to try one of those some time. I do enjoy a crunchy pickle but most pickles from the store are meah.

I finally picked up a 10lb bag of citric acid, but there are no directions on the bag.  @pdxmonkeyboy what ratio of citric acid to water do you use to mix it?

I use citric acid to clean my testing vials. You know how after a while they get that cloudy white residue that won't come off? It used to drive me crazy. I tried citric acid a couple of years ago and voila!
