Currently I am using a simple set of float valves to regulate my ATO and a 50mL/m peristaltic pump to move water.  I've been using a 30g aquarium as my top off and that sits right next to the DT.  

I ran a line downstairs into the freshwater reservoir thinking I could get rid of the upstairs holding tank.  The pump isn't strong enough to pull water upstairs through about 60' of 1/4" tubing.  How do I make this happen?

you need a low flow, high pressure diaphram pump.

I believe i have a brand new at the warehouse if you are interested. i believe it is a shurflow. it takes 3/8 tubing. 12v dc.

Hmm, some reading says those are generally only good for about 8' of head space.  Is that not true?  This is traveling up a full story.  That would probably fix the problem if it can push water that far.  How much?  

As long as the pressure isn't an issue and I don't think it will be considering that's exactly what these are made for, I think this could work.  Probably just convert it to the existing 1/4" line and drill a hole through the side of the gravity-fed top-off reservoir that these tanks come with.  Attach the end of the line to a float valve inside the reservoir and put the pump on a timer to run a few minutes in the middle of the night and voila.

8' of head? that can't possibly be correct as it has a 100psi shut off.

maybe 8' of siphon? you are definately going to need to push the water to the tank, not pull it.

we were using a similar pump to push water up about 15 feet and 120' down the warehouse.

i am quite certain it would work. My partner bought it then we didnt need it. I will see what model it is.

Ok, this is the pump that I have. NIB.  It has a 35psi switch (meaning it shuts off at 35 psi) Which is nice as if you are using it with a float switch it (should..i don't know how much pressure a float switch can hold) shut off when your res is full. 

Based on physics, a pump with 35 psi can lift water about 80 feet.  (one PSI lifts water 2.31 feet).  

$120 new on amazon.  I'll sell for $80.

Crap, wish I would have checked this.  I ended up picking up a smaller one and it'll be here today.  You can apparently just hardline the 3/8" into a reducing bushing and into a ball valve to regulate pressure.  This would avoid burst lines on a 1/4" tubing line.  Those apparently can't handle more than 40-50psi depending on material.  Is this consistent with your experience?  At any rate, super good suggestion and much appreciated.  Like I said, I hadn't even heard of this style of pump before so I had some reading to do.  Can't wait to try it out. 

Tank is being picked up later today.

Hmm.  This has me thinking about how I could implement a remote reservoir in the basement for RODI and then feed my local top off container in the DT stand.  If I had that remote-controlled power strip that Kim was getting rid of it could be pretty slick.  Still want a manual control for refilling the local reservoir but if I could have a holding tank in the basement and actuate the pump from upstairs it could work quite nicely.  I'm thinking Greg is looking to have his fully automated - which makes sense.

That's the gist.  The RO/DI is on a timer to turn on for 24 hours once a week and is controlled by a float valve in the 55g freshwater reservoir downstairs.  Then this diaphram pump will turn on every night for an hour or however long it takes it to fill up the built in top-off reservoir above the sump.  I'm drilling that 7g reservoir and putting a float valve there to control this.  That built in reservoir has a built-in gravity fed top-off system that actually feeds that into the sump.  Hopefully it'll be pretty automated and easy to deal with.  I'm getting super excited!  Still just waiting to hear back from Jeff when to go pick it up!

obviously 1/4 line varies, but as we speak, my home depot 1/4 polyethalene? hose is pushing 90psi into my RO/DI.

i dont think you need any kind of pressure reducer.

alberta... i think your remote rez would be childs play. fish a 1/4" line and low voltage wire down the wall into the basement. float switch and water line .. done. (well, and an additional float switch and small $10 12volt relay to act as a safety.

Well, used bacteria in a bottle (SmartStart?) and then moved everything over.  Just finishing up the last of the sand now.  This tank is like a dang fortress compared to the 75g!  The rocks turned out so cool too.  Pics by tonight but man I'm super stoked!

My desk is moving back and to the right several feet as soon as the old tank is out of the way.  From the perspective of that picture, that will be a seated viewing area.  Now, my wife is definitely remaining right on the other side so she'll have pretty much that view constantly.

      This is the start of a thread that will follow the build and progression of my 200g tank.
      The tank is expected to primarily house SPS, but you could call it a mixed reef...or a compromise. My wife wants to have more fish and I want to have more SPS.
      This project started in late March 2017. It began with an interest in a larger tank and specifically a tank with deep dimensions (cube or close to a cube).
      As we started to look at custom tanks we stumbled upon a used tank for sale that met the general concept we were after. That tank measures 48 wide x 36 deep x 27 tall. The glass appears to be 1/2" this and front and sides of the tank are low iron Starphire glass. The bottom glass appears to be a bit thicker.
      Step one was loading it into a truck and moving it from Hillsborough to St Helens. It was a dark and rainy night...the first step was to get the tank into the truck. Luckily the tank was on a stand and it was almost exactly the height of the pickup truck which made for an easy slide into the truck. The nerve wracking part came next which was driving it over Cornelius Pass and cringing at every bump. The tank did make it back in one piece, but then we had to work out how to unload it.
      So, the tank lived for a rainy week in the back of the truck parked outside. Luckily it is so heavy that no average criminal could have even attempted to steal it. Later in the week we devised a method to black some layers of moving blankets on the garage floor and lower one side onto the blankets while the other side leaned on the tailgate. Then we had two people tilt the tank away from the truck and the thirst guy pulled the truck away. We laid the tank town and there is sat with some sand.
      The next day I started to remove some the sand and start to clean and inspect the tank. What did I find? Hermit crabs! There were a few hermits alive in the tank and I did try to rescue them. In then end only one survived and is still around as I write this. I kept cleaning and found another surprise.
      Along the back of thank on the bottom plate of glass there was a round chip up against the edge of the tank. This chip was held in place by the silicone and had been hidden by sand. I decided to pull the chip out by carefully slicking away some silicone so that I could better clean and inspect the tank. This is point where I thought why did I buy a used tank--oh yeah--because life is too easy if you always buy things new. 
      After a few days reading stories about cracked aquariums and glass repair I decided to proceed as follows. First, I would clean the area where the chip was located and then I would attempt to use a windshield chip repair kit to reinstall the chip. This chip about 1/8 at the thickest point so I reasoned with myself that is probably did not compromise the integrity of the tank, but it might have compromised the silicone seal. If it did cause a seal problem then the tank would have to be torn down and resealed. If I was going to tear down the tank then I was definitely going to replace the bottom glass. All that said, I proceeded to replace the chip so that I could do a full water test and find out my fate.
      As I waited for the epoxy to cure I learned that sunlight is requirement. So on the second day I opened the garage and by some magic there was a sunny day in Oregon for the first time in years (well at least months). The epoxy did cure and the results look better than I would have imagined. The tank is now lying in wait for the water test which will take place shortly.
      The last leg of this update is related to the stand and the sump. We have been thinking about various sump configurations and settled on placing the sump in the garage. This opens up options for various sizes, looks and material. I nearly picked up a Rubbermaid watering trough several times and kept thinking I wasn't crazy about the roundness and extra space it would tank. Then came a post for a free 125 gallon tank (18x23x72). That seemed like a viable option and the price was right so I headed out to pick it up. As luck would have it we started down the road and a severe weather alert was issued for hail and lighting. As I turned off the road just about a mile away from the pickup location I watched lighting strike and two transformers blow....
      We picked up the tank and headed to the Home Depot. The storm barely slowed us down. I had pondered a stand design for a couple of weeks and decided to go with wood instead of steel. I had some doubts about being able to keep the stand from rusting in the long term, and I had the tools and know how to build a wood stand so I chose to build a wooden stand. We picked up (6) 2x6 boards and (8) 2x4 boards as well as some joist hangers and a sheet of 3/4 plywood.

      Other components that have been collected:
      Iwaki MD-70RLT Pump (to send water back to the tank from the garage)
      Reeflo Orca 250 protein skimmer (probably bigger than I need but it is rated for 200-800 gallons)
      A couple other pumps that will probably end up being helpful for water changes and not much else.
       
      Other components that still being contemplated:
      Pumps for flow...I'm looking at dual Maxspect Gyre xf280 or xf250s.
      More lights. I have 2x Ocean Revive T247b's and a 4 x 48" t-5 fixture. I would like to get two more OR 247b's but it seems like the supplied evaporated recently (maybe due to new model forthcoming?). Maybe some Radion lights will be in my future.
       
      Well that was a lot for today. I'm sure someone has an opinion or advice or argument to offer now so have at it. I'll keep plugging away and in the next episode you might see me getting under the house to reinforce the floor and run some pipes.

      I spent 20 mins typing a tank thread then my web browser crashed and I lost it, so here is my new one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
       
      Anyway this tank is a Red Sea Reefer Nano. Its a pretty good tank that is pre-drilled with a sump. The display is 21 gallon 18 inches cubed, with something like an 8 gallon sump for 29 gallon total volume. I go to university at OSU and don't have tones of money to throw at it but its doing pretty good about a year in.
       
      Besides the tank nothing else is too fancy. Lighting is the Marine Orbit Pro LED, thinking about adding a 2 bulb T5 to supplement it and get some different colors. An Aquamaxx Skimmer, 175 GPD RODI, Cheap Powerhead return pump all that jazz. Things I would like to add in the future, the T5's or maybe another or different LED setup. Maybe a Calcium Reactor if I start keeping more SPS, I already have a CO2 tank from past planted freshwater tanks. I have also thought about turning a canister filter into a GFO chamber. Possibly adding dosing equipment again if I get into a heavier stock of corals. Also an Auto Top off because adding two mason jars of water a day get annoying. Anyway here is what I have in my tank and then some Pictures at the end!
