June 2017 TPA BBQ Meeting Pictures

Recommended Posts

Yesterdays June Meeting BBQ was another awesome event!

Such a good venue and turn out of people, the sponsors of our club are such gracious hosts and Garett is no exception. There was lots of fish, corals, and inverts stocked up and conveniently a very enticing deal of buy 2 get one free on all livestock making it difficult to leave without a new addition to the tanks. I mean, make a trip out of town so might as well snag something while your there am I right!?

Anyhow, for those of you who did not attend the June meeting out at The Premium Aquarium out in Salem here is a little recap of some of the good times had yesterday and some pictures to go with them...We wished you were here.

Garett had the TPA crew in Full Effect! Everyone of his team was busy bagging and tagging or ringing out keeping up with the pace.

SAM_0721.JPG

All while keeping a cool and collected demeanor, Sometimes it looks like you all are actually having fun at work!? I am going to tell the owner next time I see him. But really, your good attitudes make it a much better atmosphere to shop in.

SAM_0760.JPG

SAM_0715.JPG

You all are great at your jobs, keep up the good work and we will all keep coming back. Corals and tanks were looking pretty spot on, seeing some nice growth in a couple of the aquariums since i had last visited. And the rimless systems are Sleek!

SAM_0714.JPG

Need a little Acro love? This is such a nice display, lookin good my friends.

SAM_0707.JPG

Lookin goooood.

After being greeted by the TPA staff some of the first faces I see are some old familiar friends.

SAM_0704.JPG

Loooks like some of the Washington crew made it South to hang with some of us Oregonians. Stylaster and Gumby here in the front but you probably already knew that. Very cool cats who have a definite coral growing thumb. I apologize for not catching the name of the gentleman in the back but he was also from up north and had commented about how nice this Salem store was, so we were certainly in agreement.

SAM_0745.JPG

Paratore here bringing some pretty interesting shroomage for the impromtu frag swap. Sorry I didn't bring anything to trade man, I was originally not going to come but the night before I made peace with my inner aquarium demons and agreed with them to go to the meeting. Next time my man.

SAM_0927.JPG

Sasquatch! Thank you So much for the gorgonian, It was more like a colony than a frag. It is in my acclimation tank but it will most likely end up with the seahorses. You Da Man! Hit me up for some zoa goodness anytime my friend.

SAM_0740.JPG

One of our newest Board member additions Albertareef and his wife drove from Portland. Good to see you two again, for some reason I thought you lived in Washington but now that I know you are a little closer maybe we can find some time one day to actually get out to one another's houses. I live another 40 minutes from where this meeting was so not Too far from you.

 SAM_0821.JPG

A few steps further in I see Kassah, checking out the coral colonies. long time no see man, glad you made it to the meeting, sorry I got wrapped up in the crowd of people and didn't make rounds your way. Maybe next month at the Marine Hatfield Science Center Tour?

SAM_0812.JPG

Highschool Reefer looking for that single jewel to catch the eye and then swoop it up. Sounds like your tank is coming along just fine, maybe sometime we can do a trade or two. I have some hammers and frog spawns that could be trimmed a little. No torches right now though, my other Euphyllia took my Glabrescens down.

SAM_0820.JPG

Exodus was another person I don't get to see at a meeting too often but here he is, another person who is on the steady path to a killer system. Sounded to me like it was about time for an impressive upgrade. In the works I know, but still, it sounds like it will be a nice system with a killer sump and equipment. Hit me up if you need a hand with something yeah.

SAM_0917.JPG

Kireek and KKnight here chatting reef no doubt. I saw a nice chalice and lobo you snagged Kireek but didn't see KKnight's loot, I bet both of your tanks are too full for more coral but we always find room for just one more frag right? Happy you were able to make it, the more good folks out the better.

SAM_0836.JPG

SharkLover and DarkAngel, very nice to meet you two. Looking forward to seeing what you end up making in your custom acrylic tank in tank. I mean Who doesn't like seeing corals and sharks...Maybe you can work that snowflake in there somehow too.

SAM_0822.JPG

ReeferMadness and his wife Dominique looking for some eye candy for their tanks at home, you don't have to look far here. I kinda want one of those electric flame scallops for our seahorse tank now too. I mean I we are already feeding the horses so why not?

SAM_0930.JPG

I loved this picture of TPA owner Garett sharing some of his vast experience and knowledge with a new customer and Jim on the right just grinning about a different subject going on in one of the other many friendly reefer conversations going around at the same time. There was just the right atmosphere and the right people to make a recipe for social success! Love it!

SAM_0731.JPG

Kim and Serena where most of the muscle and legwork on this meeting so I have to give a big shout out to these two! You two girls Rock! Your quite the team, we all appreciate it very much. I am going to see about getting y'all a raise, I you don't get payed enough ;)

SAM_0763.JPG

Everybody really enjoyed the food and accommodations, for a hot day everything worked out really well. That Serena could open a catering business Easy!

SAM_0784.JPG

Emerald getting some tickets to throw down on some prizes...Wait a minute!? Tickets?

SAM_0839.JPG

OH SHOOT!!! I think its Raffle Time Already!

Love the pics and recap Bert - you are the best!  I was pretty impressed with the turnout given the weather - glad so many folk braved the heat to come in and enjoy all the hospitality provided by Garret and his crew as well as all the work Kim and Sirena put in.  Sure I am forgetting some others here but great job all!

I thought the turnout was pretty good too but yet not too crowded.

When it did come to the raffle time, 3:00 was the final hour too announce the winners of the June meet.

SAM_0849.JPG

Usually Holly and Kim have the honors of doing the raffle drawing but this time there was a rotation of the people drawing the tickets just to shake things up a bit and have a little fun.

SAM_0878.JPG

A $50 Premium Aquarium Certificate went home with Holly I believe...Actually I am pretty sure is got spent before her departure but thats okay. I know there was plenty to choose from.

SAM_0866.JPG

This man here, Jeremevans, was the surprised winner of the Bubble Magus Dosing pump!

SAM_0886.JPG

Here we have Exodus pulling the winning ticket for the MP40 circulation pump and Guess Who is holding the winning ticket on this one?

SAM_0892.JPG

Serena!!! She got the Echotech awesomeness that is the Vortech!!! Put that bad boy to good use yeah.

And the final BIG prize on the raffle list was the Apex...

SAM_0898.JPG

Wait!? What!? Who!?

SAM_0902.JPG

Although Serena was holding the winning ticket it was Zoolander who took home the gold.

SAM_0934.JPG

I believe Kim and Holly helped the Apex get to Richard and I know he is Stoked!

Some heavy duty raffle prizes here so there was alot of tickets to compete with in the drawings, I still had to throw down cause if you don't play you can't win...This time I just played. Better luck next time to all who entered.

And Now for some more pictures of the gathering, please feel free to add to the thread if you have some interesting photos to share with us all.

But First A BIG THANK YOU To President Emerald, First Lady Sirena, Treasurer MrBret, Secratary Miles, Vendors Relation Lexinverts, and our wonderful Board of Directors Gill&Fin, KKnight, AlbertaReef, FlashyFins, Jorge, Premium Aquarium, And Zoolander...And out tech staff The Chief and The Clark. Your guys and gals are a great team, keep up the good work yeah!

Now since the shop was looking so good

SAM_0751.JPG

We will start it off with some HOT coral action!

SAM_0782.JPG

Chalice colonies just oozing bright colors.

SAM_0819.JPG

Catalaphyllia just doing their thing and looking just Elegant!

SAM_0780.JPG

Reds,Blues, and Greens all around us, it was difficult to resist such temptation!

SAM_0708.JPG

Even the SPS game was strong in some of the tanks, colored sticks for ALL!!!

SAM_0726.JPG

How about a drool worthy Lobo!? They got em!

SAM_0706.JPG

And don't tell me you need an acan frag, they got colonies here for days!

SAM_0786.JPG

Some of the folks kinda trickled in during the BBQ so I did not get to "meet and greet" everyone, my apologies.

SAM_0809.JPG

Total overhaul on the Deep Dimension Display in the front of the building. I am sure this tank has some grand plans in store for it, I sense and acropora dense reef in the works.

We missed you Andrew!  It was surprisingly pleasant in the shop even though it broke 100 outside. Plenty of motivation to just hang out, shop and converse with some fellow reefers. Oh yeah, and eat some tasty BBQ curtesy of Sirena who manned the grill outside the entire time (thanks again!).

Next time!

As mentioned in the September meeting thread the meet and greet at Moloko's would make an opportune place/time to have a frag swap so lets get one started here. These are the general guidelines I like to recommend for these coral exchanges.
If you would like, you can do your trading on the fly by just bringing by a few pieces and hoping that some one will have a desirable coral you want...Or better yet, you can post up what you have to trade and work out a preemptive exchange here on the forums, that method always works best for me. You can feel free to use this thread to post your trade-ables in or start a thread of your own.
But First, let me get you some of Bert's basis tips for success here.
1.) make an attempt to have a fragment of reasonable size and health and try and get things cut and ready a few days to a week ahead of time to have the wounds healed up for the exchange. And double/triple check for pest invertebrates or algaes before sending your corals out, we try to keep invasives to a minimum here...And once you get your frags home, just in case, always acclimate the specimens then dip the corals before you put them into your personal aquarium. QT Aquariums are best but good old Revive, Coral RX, Melafix, Iodine, or Bayer will do much better at prevention than nothing.
2.) Try to package your corals appropriately. This can mean not putting a spiny coral like birds nest into a thin dollar store bag or not utilizing insulation on an extended cold or warm trip. Try a small cooler or Styrofoam. If you can't find either of these and the destination is a long distance, keep the vehicle air conditioned or heated appropriately. As far as packaging goes you can double bag and use thicker mil plastics, or something else like a Tupperware or specimen container. I have even used washed out yogurt or cottage cheese containers that stack well inside the coolers. Just use something that will work, nothing like losing a nice and colorful animal because the bag got too cold and leaked all the water out on the way home.
3.)Do your best to be courteous and fair to one another by not take advantage of each others ignorance or generosity. These are people of all levels in the hobby so give them the benefit of your knowledge and experience instead of the cold shoulder. And speaking of generosity, that giving nature has always been smiled upon here at PNWMAS and pay it forward tends comes back around these parts.
Well, the meeting is closing in fast, less than two weeks yeah. I believe Christian who runs the place will also be interested in doing some trades as well, I imagine he will post up in the forum here soon.
So Let's see em folks,  Whatcha Got!? Corals that is!

What do we have for September gatherings you ask? Well, it has been a while since we made it up to North Mississippi  to visit our friends at Moloko's so we decided to have a casual meet and greet at this sponsors awesome reef themed pub. If you have not been there you are missing out on a very unique establishment. This will be a perfect mingling opportunity prior to next months upcoming big Frag Fest event. We can chill out, relax, and talk salt or just get to know each other more... A far cry from the hustle and bustle of the Expos.
Being a meet and greet situation I think it would make sense to get a frag swap going on, I know many of us have some corals to trim and being two weeks away it makes for an ideal heal time on any of those fresh cuts. And since the shindig doesn't start until 4 it will give us a chance to shop at some of the Portland area saltwater stores prior, so bring a small cooler.
The address is-- 3967 N Mississippi Ave, Portland, OR 97227
Starts at 4:00PM until 6:00PM or whenever you want to go home on Saturday the 29th, they have a full service bar as well as some nice panini sandwiches amongst other edibles to choose from.

May 2018 meet was another over the top meeting for the PNWMAS. For those who could not make it you missed out on a great event.
Rudy at The Golden Basket hosted the May gathering and did Great, his family works together seamlessly and handled the clubs needs without a hitch. And Kim, Siirena, Scott, and Saun did an amazing job of coordinating, cooking, and setting up all of this. Wonderful people right here!

Kim an Sirena in this pic getting all the kinks worked out before anyone even got there, this is an amazing couple right here. Emerald is ready with tickets for raffles in hand and in the background Sirena is making sure the margarita machine is ready to go...

And Yes, You heard that right, margarita MACHINE! One side was for the virgin blue raspberry slushy mix and the left was for the real deal margarita with tequila. This is the first "meeting" I have been to that had a margarita machine to dispense beverages.

Chef Scott helped Sirena by making a few things at home and maning the grill like he does so well. That marinated skirt steak was tasty stuff, never would have guessed there was soy sauce involved.

Albertareebt  in and setup a whole sound system for music along with a mini amp for the speakers and raffles. As you all know Saun is a stand up guy, always willing to pitch in here and there.

I had to include as much vertical as I could on a couple pictures here, not only to show off our OSU Beavers tent, but to take notice of the amazingly beautiful clear and sunny day we had. Several people had enough forethought to bring camping chairs to sit down outside and enjoy the sunny weather.

Like Lewisfisherman here, polarized shades are not a bad idea today...You might still need them once you go inside and see some of the amazing corals. I know you found a few bright gems in Rudy's shop.

Mark and Exodus having a conversation right before things got started, there were several early birds who were more than willing to be of assistance where needed like these two. Both are seasoned veterans in the salt water hobby.

Eclipse on a sunny day!? Good to see you, glad you found a little time to come out and hang with the PNWMAS crew.

As usual, once inside you see Rudy and his team just working away, move em in and move em out. These guys are either taking pictures or bagging corals, not a bad gig if you ask me.

Pantherguy, stopping in for a little bit. This guy has some insanely colored corals if you ever get a chance to snag a frag from him I highly recommend it.

BAAHHH!!! Its OptimusPrime rolling in with the cooler in hand, full of goodies no doubt. Sounds like you might need to setup an anemone containment tank, I have that other bubble tip for you next time we meet up.

Maxicurls here is a guy I haven't seen for a while, maybe we should make one of those impromptu Molokos meets and see whats in the reef tanks by the bar, while eating my panini.

PDXMnkey aand Albertareef talking about financial changes in the market and effects on consumers, alot has changed in the last few years that's for sure, I think it is great when things become more available and affordable. Win win for a guy like me.

Did someone call for, the Zorro!? Whenever there is a reefer in trouble he is there, and whenever there is a must have high end Acro, he will have it. No trouble here, except trying to pick only ONE must have high end acros at Rudy's...I went with the Olympic Torch but really there is no wrong choice.

Tesch here for another round of PNWMS meeting fun! We are one big coral reef family here at our Marine Aquarium Society with everyone on the same page of reefing. Hit me up sometimes if you want to do some trading man, I always have something that needs a trim.

Youcallmenny conversing with PDXreefer front left, in the back ground we have Albertareef laughing on the left, FlashyFins and Princeton talking with the Sasquatch center background, and Ken on the right.

Sharklover and DarkAngel didn't miss out on the festivities, so many cool corals and cool people this was certainly the happening place to be this last Saturday.

Was nice to meet a couple folks I had not seen before. Thanks Saltedwaffles for the zoa frags, hope the chalice works out for you, just let me know if it gives you any trouble and I will see what I can do.

Jeremevans and his future reef enthusiast.  hope you two are ready for a talk, because the PNWMAS Board chose a few members to act as a panel to answer some SPS focused questions.

We missed you Roy, but Rudy and I tried to manage without you, we covered a lot of ground in a short time so I hope some of the audience was able to use at least some of the information spoken. For those of you who missed it Roy answered a few questions right here.  http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/topic/43136-what-sps-questions-do-you-have/?page=2

We even had Danlu speak about lighting wavelengths and LED diodes which can shed some "Light" on aspects of coral colors and growth. Recurrent flicker of %100 strength diodes to solve wavelength issues seems totally sound. If you want to talk about lights this guy knows a thing or two for sure.
After the presentation was done we moved onto the next event...The Raffles!
      Get Your Tickets!!!

Just look at all these prizes! I don't know how we pull together so much good stuff for these raffles but alot of it has to do with our amazing group of officers and our generous sponsors, Thanks You Guys and Gals!

Patiently waiting with tickets for the ensuing raffle. Back left R-3, front right ReefRun, and behind right we have Walt.

Damien taking home one of the LED units, Whoop Whoop!!! Solid units right there man, nice score.

FlashyFins taking home the Upscalees Certificate here. Show me the Money!

Spectra coming in for the win! This guy most certainly deserves it, he has always been very generous as well as being a helpful hand when he can, Scotts a good man.

Lora and SRoberts took home not only the other LED unit but also a pass to the upcoming MACNA event. Talk about a lucky day!

At the end of it all we had all the helping hands we needed to take it down and wrap it up, you could call this team work or comradery , either way I love this crew.

Sirena and Kim loading the truck to the brim Ike they have done this before, these two are real troopers, excellent job ladies, excellent job.
So that was our Awesome May 2018 meeting. Another one for the records, a most outstanding meet if I do say so myself. The feeling of community was really there, the laughing, the trading, the conversing, and all round good times.
Thank You GoldenBasket, Thank You Emerald, Thank You Sirena, Thank You Spectra, Thank You Albertareef. you ALL made this one special and one to remember. And thanks to our PNWMS Crew, you make this forum go round, keep it real y'all...See you next month at the MHSC yeah!
      Reef On!!!

    • By badxgillen
We bring you another public PNWMAS announcement, the Annual summer MHSC visit is almost upon us and the day is set for this informative upcoming meeting. Last year the weather was wonderful making the trip to the Newport Coast fabulous for before and after visits up and down our west coast! Sid is doing his best to make sure we have access to their personal break area which includes an indoor and outdoor alcove with benches, picnic area, and a grill spot sporting a Weber BBQ. I recommend a potluck style event were you can bring a dish and sample others so bring something healthy, or bring something sweet, just bring something good to eat.
You all will want to save the date on the calendar for this one.
June 30th 12:00 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365
And for those of you who don't know the facility has had a recent overhaul a couple months back improving just about everything there is, so it should have plenty new to see even for those of us who have attended the previous years. And if all this wasn't enough reason to come out, the director Sid is going to take us to a different wing of the marine center and give us a personal hands on fish health workshop demonstration! Here are a few pics from last years killer presentation.

Last year this was an amazing experience in which we learned a number of protocols implemented in a facility like the HMSC including skin scrapes, gill samples, microscope identifications, and health assessment.

I mean who wouldn't want to get the knowledge and experience of this kind of nitty gritty tooth and claw kind of stuff!. There is much to see and learn here.

Say AAAHHHH Mr. Wolf Eel, its time for your check up.
Looking forward to seeing you all there.
