baumer Posted January 12, 2017 Share Posted January 12, 2017 (edited) Is it possible to have to much flow in a tank.??? I have a 75gallon tank 48 x 18. The 2 power heads are rated.. 1250 each.. Return pump.. Rio 3100 pump. 900 gpm Not sure if I need to go smaller... Whats a good rule on thumb.. Thank you for you feed back.. Also I'm sure it will be tank specific based on rock work and what not. I'm sure someone more experienced here will chime in anytime! PowderBlue Posted January 12, 2017 Share Posted January 12, 2017 I would say you're fine, I have a 48x24 with 2 gyre 130s and a 2300gph return pump, granted I run my pump at about 60 percent, but it's really tank specific. PowderBlue Posted January 12, 2017 Share Posted January 12, 2017 If you want to calculate it, take your powerheads flow rates, find your apx return pump flow rate, don't forget that your overflow, head loss etc play a key role in this number, add them together and divide it by your display volume. That will give you an estimate. I run my tank at around 60 times. Most say sps needs minimum 40x turnover. If your overflows can take it and the water does not spill out over the top of the tank then I would say your good. Unless the occupants in your tank like less flow....
