Mine is in my frag tank, which are two 40 gallon tanks plumbed together with a 40 gallon sump. The tank it is in is only about 7" deep. I run OR247, 1 1/2 hours blues alone, with 7 1/2 hours blues and whites. I hand dose Brightwell Code A & B. I have a cheap-o Chinese powerhead running in there, with this particular frag in medium to low flow. I keep a 6-line and a 2-bar rabbit fish (super cute--about 1 1/2 inch long) and only feed the tank lightly.

So...here's the rub. I'm out of town and won't be back until Sunday the 8th, at which time I will be seriously jet lagged. Can I please, please, please have a couple of extra days to post the pics? Please???

I'm back in the county and as promised, here are my pics--measurement of the length and width, and all four sides. 9c03242314d54f76c8447480e83a6c5e.jpg5a664b5bd078415901111eee52dc98ae.jpg9e95e8b79397541837b35b9a47545814.jpg98acaf10629ea2763a28dda3b2354bca.jpgc1e5aa993e628763616a0df635b47b5b.jpgfa0e4fbce2859c1cff81055edf2c8579.jpg4b11bf3f716c53bdee7d961066c6f299.jpg

Welcome back home.... could you tell me what I intensity you blues and your whites are set at? I just can't seem to find a happy with my OR 247. I keep test my water and it looks fine so I thinking it's the intensity or flow... I think.... mine isn't dead but it just won't extend..

Sure.  I've got my blues on 50, and whites on 33.  They sit about 15" above the water, and the frag is about 3" below the water line.  The last PAR reading I took showed that area to be around 70.

I would say that mine is in a really really low PAR, I need to test that tanks corner but it couldn't be more than 35-40 most likely less. And I have been getting great extension.

Man, we did see a bit of a fall off of competitors, I am going to blame the Goniopora. I hope those who have not posted still have their frag, it is a nice consolation prize indeed.

Sorry Danlu, I hope the frag is still doing well in your system. I bet those new lights are pretty intense for the little polyps, mine is doing rather well in the corner of my tank. I am aiming to get a really nice photo with polyp extension for Junes entry, especially since there are no required measurements until the end post.

Finally.. I'm out of the competition but finally after writing it off as "well poor thing is toast"and just looking at a lump moving it all over the tank, alk crashing and to high nitrates. A complete disaster all around. There is happy poly extension. YES there is "LIFE" muhhhhaaaaaa...

Now I am just posting 2 pictures just for fun but it is by no means mandatory until the final posts. I am just showing off some polyp extension and some developing polyps.

SAM_1081_zpsovnbgrbc.jpg

Definitely getting some coverage around those edges, pretty much no rough spots at all.

SAM_1082_zps7p8am9kg.jpg

And like I said the new polyps are getting some size to them, soon they will be large enough to push out further and repeat the process.

Mine is chugging right along. I'm starting to see some growth at the edges, like Robert was showing on his frag.

It's hard to capture the color of this goni. It looks really purple in the tank, but the pics always come out so pink.

Wow.The new growth is remarkable!

I'm a little jealous.Absolutely no polyp extension or new growth on my side of the fence.I have moved the frag as a last resort. It really seems more stable now.

Lex- How many Gonis are you up to now? 5?

H.T.- Has yours been on the sand bed the whole time? I was wondering about them catching tiny micro fauna in the proper conditions.

Gill&Fin-What are you putting in your tank water? Miracle Gro for corals?

Eclipse-I am wondering if over time this goni will just attach itself to the rock and just go from there. And on another note maybe I could snag some Prolifera when we cross paths next .

Matt-Frag looks really good with that acro back drop, is that a bunch of green aculeus?

Paratore-The TPA Purple contrasts the adjacent gonis very well, just wait till it gets bigger.

Kireek-Maybe it is getting too much light, I still need to measure the intensity over mine but I know it needs very little.

I am having tank issues. First I was fighting cyano, still fighting flat worms and now I am fighting dino's! So in turn all of my sps is bleaching and browning out. The green sps is the hulk.

Yeah man, just hanging on the sand bed. Same spot mostly. I've moved it about 4 inches because I can push it back under an overhang or bring it out to get more light. It started in more direct light, but it is now under the overhang.

Well Contestants this is the official thread to post your Cuttlefish And Corals Zoa Grow Out entries! If you post your entry in another thread it will not count. Contest begins April 20th!You have a week before and a week after to post up your picture. This competition will run 4 months!
Ground Rules: The goal of this competition is to be both educational and fun. I am hopeful the winners will be able to share their "secrets" and truly see how different lighting, supplements, dosing, and tank parameters can make a difference in growth.
Rules and Guidelines for The CNC Zoa Grow Out Competition.
1.Your first post must include a quick write up of your system in thiis competition thread. Including tank size, flow, lighting, placement of the frag, frag measurement, equipment (ie calcium reactor, dosing, etc), feeding regiment, etc.
      2. You will be required to post photo updates. The contest will start April 20th. You will be required to post a photo update once a month. I will remind you of this when the time is soon to post. I know life gets busy and people go out of town so you have a 2 week window to post. You will have 7 days before the 20th and 7 days after to post your update. If you do not post within the allotted time frame you will be disqualified.
      3. Please no cheating. This competition is meant to be fun and for bragging rights. Cheaters will be disqualified and banned from any future competitions.
      4. The frags must remain on the original plug. You may modify the plug if needed example cutting off the stem for placement. You may place the frag anywhere you want in your tank and you may move it to a different spot during the competition but it is frowned upon  and you cannot move it to a new tank as the point is to see how the frag does over time in different systems.
      5. Initial photos of frags need to have a top down as well as side shot so we can all see the frag and what you are starting with. No hiding zoa polyps in your photos. Not following the rules will cause you to be disqualified, I know that sounds harsh but it is out of fairness to the rest of the group. Remember a lot can happen in 4 months. During the last growout many were DQ'd due to not posting. It's really simple. JUST DO IT. Length of competition: The competition will run for 4 months. This will give us enough time for       the frag to grow. A lot can happen in 4 months and a lot of people could drop out, so if you are persistent, you have a chance to win the grand prize. This will give EVERYONE the same advantage\disadvantage with acclimation and so on. Pictures will be required frequently for updates. Final post will be July 20th 2015 for the winner.
Judging a winner: Should be pretty straight forward this grow out. The most polyps at the end wins.
But the Grand Prize is... Not going to spoil it yet, you have to play our little game here.
Our Standing List of Fine PNWMAS Contestants are...
      1. Sharklover
      2. Paratore
      3. Kasasah
      4. Lewisriverfisherman
      5. Spectra
      6. Reefnjunkie

      18. JMurray
      19. Pdxmonkeyboy
      20. Gil & Fin
      21. TheDSBlack
So lets see who is who among the competition, Who thinks they have a chance against some of PNWMAS finest coral growers? Post em up and lets get this party started.

Featured here is the mother colony, not my grow out frag... Although mine might look like that in 4 months, I got the JUICE!!!

It was a great time indeed, Erin was a great host answering all sorts of questions and his crew was not only polite but very helpful. The store was neat and clean, very open and inviting.

Stole this pic from Emerald since it was better than my store front pic.

Lots of windows make the shop bright and being well lit makes the atmosphere a bit "lighter".

The shop itself was looking spectacular, this store is locked and loaded.

As with any time we visit the TPA we gotta leave with something and this time was no exception...But we will get to that later when there is a little show and tell of some shop purchases.

This grow out frag will be going into one of my shallow acrylic tanks.
Aquarium- Acrylic and about 120 gallons
Filteration-Moded Coralife skimmer with Reef Octopus needle wheel pump.
Circulation-Maxi Jet 1,500 Gallon Per Hour Circ Pump and the good old Koralia 750 gallon I believe for a total of 2,250GPH. I aim to get better flow soon this tank soon enough though.
Daily\Weekly additions-Activated Carbon, carbon dosing, 3 part dosing BRS style, variety of frozen foods for the fish and coral gumbo.
Fish- bi color angel, coral beauty angel, pair of percula clowns, and an algae blenny.
Lighting- the new Reefi LED for 12 hours on and 12 hours off.

      PH 8
KH 9-10 I don't want it this high and aim to let it lower some before dosing again.
Calcium 500 comments same as KH above
      Magnesium 1500
      Ammonia 0
      Nitrites 0
      Nitrates 5-10

      Side Shot

      And Top Down X)

I have a total of two polyps to start with...Actually I had four but I cut mine in half to make sure my friend Lex got to participate as well as I. It was my system that they got blown around in any ways. maybe they will show up...

      Maybe not :(

There is 300 pounds of rock in the system as well so who know where those polyps are.

A little over a month ago there was a thread that had some mentioning of wanting to do an LPS for a grow out instead the SPS or zoanthids that had been previously done. LPS is a big category, so it took me a while thinking about it to really narrow things down. At first I wanted to do some form of favia or closed brain but those can be aggressive. Then I was tempted by the beautiful extravagant chalices that are too spendy for any one person, but those grow slower than molasses. Oh what to do...

I needed something with some color, not too hard to keep and not something too common...
A trip to The Premium Aquarium and a long chat with Garret and then Chris got me thinking straight!
I got the full run down of possible candidates and believe me there was no shortage, brains, chalices, acans, and euphyllias. But what finally got my attention and really got me thinking was this beautiful purple gonipopora. Actually there was a few purple gonis there but this one was bright purple and white, with a true flower pot look, not one of those encrusters.

This picture is with flash on, the goni in the back ground is the same just without as much warm white light from the camera. Look at those purples.

These are beauties thats for sure.

Lots of motion with these too.
When I first acquired these chunks they were slow to transition to home tank life, you know how some of those finicky gonioporas can be, but over the last few weeks they have really started to perk up. I think these are going to be a reasonably hardy variety once all is said and done.
With those fat and juicy polyps.

SO, any body here want to try their hands at another grow out contest!?
I have a feeling this one won't be quite as temperamental as the acropora, but you never know, each tank is a little different. Grand prize winner will be seeing some fine TPA corals in the end, second place through 13th will get to keep their prize purple gonis, and last places will get the intricate bleached white skeleton of their entry frag..Its a win win all around!

besides, its always a hoot to do these Grow Outs.
