Chicago Aquarium

No disrespect to OCA, but she said that every exhibit was just steps ahead of OCA.

Not as good as the Montery Bay Aquarium but still very nice.

To me, the reason that land locked aquariums like Chicago's Shedd Aquarium deserve a little more respect is that they have to run a closed system....there's no flowing in pure ocean water like at Monterey or OCA......they have to run their systems just like we have to.

Public aquariums near an ocean will typically create a theme that show case animals that are indiginous to the area. I like to see what they can did up from the lakes. :D If that is what they call a step ahead, I rather go to Steve's house with a 6-pack. :D Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy visiting the public aquariums to get ideas.

I agree with steve that having it by a fairly clean ocean is a huge advantage but I am sure that the OCA budget is pretty small compared to most P. Aquaruims . Monteray bay has alot of the same exhibits as Oca but there is just a differance of scale and Quality. I can only see dark tanks of grayish brown sharks and ray's once to enjoy it , after that it is just dull.Maybe Steave you should become "Special adviser to colorful cold water exhibit" at OCA. My first suggestion is that you turn those big tanks into something that can handle lot's of light, life and diveristy so we can sit for hour's and find many amazing creature's.

I grew up on the south side of Chicago, and have visited the Shedd Aquarium a couple times. The last time I was home I went again and can definitely say OCA can't hold a candle to the Shedd. They have over 500 different tanks separated by region of the world and also have beluga whales, pacific white-sided dolphins, walruses, penguins, and otters. There are shows several times a day for the whales and dolphins. When you first walk in there is a huge circular reef tank in the middle of the building, where divers feed the occupants several times a day. There's also an exhibit with Komodo Dragons. There's a new wing I didn't go into - it cost extra - called the Wild Reef, which is like the shark display at OCA, but also has a mangrove and coral area. There are so many different exhibits, it is a full day event, for sure.

Check out their website:

you can do a virtual tour of almost all the exhibits. If you're passing thru Chicago, it's a must see.

Another thing to check out there - Brookfield Zoo. Puts the San Diego Zoo to shame.

Those are some awesome pics Jon! It looks like you had a great time at Shedd. http://www.sheddaquarium.org/index.html

I would just like to add that in my recent communications some of the staff at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, there has been interest in working on a relationship with PNWMAS. They have visited our website, and are looking forward to our visit next month and working with us in the future.

The Hatfield Marine Science Center is also in the process of adding new exhibits.

The Shedd Aquarium's Grand Opening was on May 30, 1930, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium opened on May 23, 1992. Shedd has been around over 70 years, while the OCAQ just over 15 years!

We will have information posted in the next few days about our Behind The Scenes tours of OCAQ and HMSC! (Saturday, April 26, 2008)

The Oregon Coast Aquarium BTS tour is now only available by special arrangement, and PNWMAS would like this and the HMSC tour to continue as an annual event!(rock2)
