Moving to Portland

Hi my name is Chad. My wife and I are planning our move to Portland next summer. We currently live in Chicago. I have been an active member of a local forum here and have found it to be of great benefit and a ton of fun. I wanted to be proactive and get to know some people before I get there.

I have been in the hobby for about 4 years now and certainly have an addiction problem that the best counseling will not cure!

I currently have 2 tanks. A 65g RR mixed reef and 14g Biocube in my son's room. Just retrofitted the cube with Steve's LED's.

Unfortunately I will need to sell all of the live stock to make the move across country. I will also sell the 65g tank, stand etc, but will keep all of the equipment used. Looking to go a little bigger, maybe 90g.

Here are a couple picks of the tanks currently.

Hey Chad! Good to see you making a switch to not only PNWMAS, but to the PNW in general. :) Summer in this area is about as perfect as perfect gets! You'll be amazed. Unfortunately, I hope you're prepared for rain for the other 8 or 9 months. Have you been to this area before?

I look forward to meeting you next year. We have meetings every month and a great group of reefers to pull knowledge from. Keep us updated about things.

I have been to the area and have numerous friends who live there. It is beautiful! I also race sails boats here on Lake Michigan so we have some great rain gear to power through the showers! Just part of the fun!

Making the move to Portland is a big decision, one that my wife and I made too. We've been here for 8 years now, love it.

Hardest part for us was not the weather, it was the drivers, which coming from Chicago will be a shock for you too. People here drive the speed limit, or under, and actually let you over with a blinker. Weird huh. It took sometime but now I am the guy making fun of the dude doing 70 on the freeway, saying he musta moved here from Cali.

I came from a reefing community down there, and did the same thing as you. I found some great people here and have made some awesome friends. Overall the people in the NW are pretty nice, I think it's cuz they live in the Northwest.

Let us know if you have any questions about area's of town or anything like that before ya move out. I know that was a big help to us.

If you want to keep any of your livestock you can ship it ahead and I am sure people would babysit it for you. I know I wouldn't mind at all and usually have an extra tank or 3 around. At the same time, the community here is full of coral farmers and we have some incredible LFS's as well.

If you guys are driving out, there are some great stops along the way if you have a few extra days. I made the trip from PDX to Midway by car a couple months ago, so would be happy to give suggestions too (like staying away from Sturgis if your not into bikes that week....)

Good luck on the planning. Hope to see ya around.

Well welcome to the North West (soon at least) You have some very nice tanks. looking forward to seeing your next builds.

And don't let these guys scare you. We more than make up for the lack of sun with espresso and micro brews (drinking)

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I am thinking about have some friends here hold some of my cherry pieces for a few months and when the tank is up and stable ship them to me. I love scaping and have learned a lot so I look at this as an opportunity to test my skills!

I look forwarded to meeting folks out there and of course cherry picking those frag tanks!

Honestly I am looking forward to the new build! I will probably grab a frag tank and a couple pieces LR to set up quickly and start to qt and stock the sps I am looking for while the main display stabilizes. I plan to build it from dry rock to insure no pest are introduce. There are a few folks here that are battling aefw, luckily I am not one of them.

Sounds like you have a good plan. When I was working on a build I bought BRS pukani rock and kept it in a rubbermaid tote and seeded it with some live rock. It really cut down on the cycling process. My only mistake was I used rock with mushrooms on it that I was hoping would die but they were stubborn (wife).

There have been some people who have had AEFW here too. It happens. It's wise to QT if you have the space.:D
