AquaticEngineer
I just purchased this from ebay as a test light setup: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330524311181&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT Along with this for the heatsink: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370494796097 They do sell optics for these lights on ebay, they sell 90 degree, and 60 degree lenses. I'm working on using an old lens from a surveillance camera as an adjustable LED lens. Here are the lenses from Ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=50w+led+lens Right now my total cost on the test light is $54.87, and my neighbor funded me $50 of it to buy one and test them out to see if he should use them over his reef he is building. Wish me luck and fast shipping
Drew
I would love to see pictures when you got something up Subscribed.
AquaticEngineer
Oh for sure, there will be many pictures Estimated shipping date says between April 6th and April 19th, so I got a little bit of a wait until I get to wire it up. I did however find a 12,000K 50w LED bulb on ebay for $48, this is the same spectrum bulb that Ecoxotic is using. http://cgi.ebay.com/HIGH-POWER-50W-12000K-WHITE-LED-4000-4500LM-24-26V-/390245307832?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5adc6ed5b8
AquaticEngineer
Got the 50w LED and driver in the mail today, just waiting for the heatsink to hook it up to and we'll be in testing phase.
jgf86123
Sounds good man, definitely keep us posted on this one, I'd like to look into myself...Especially like the looks of the 25w LED Spotlights that were on ReefBuilders I believe it was a few days ago. AquaticEngineer
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. I just got the heat sink today for the 50w LED setup, so I wired it up and gave it a test. I think I have retinal damage. I'll have a video up shortly.
moovinfast
I Imagine. I remember when I fired up a 3w CREE for the first time. And I thought that thing was bright.

impur
WOW that IS bright. Sheesh. Are there optics for that size of LED?
jonas
That is awesome! How long can you leave it on before you think it will get to hot?
AquaticEngineer
That was wired up without even any thermal conductive grease inbetween the LED and heatsink, so once I get some of that on there and add a fan and a piece of aluminum to mount it on, I should be able to run it as long as I need to. Its all a matter of dissipating the heat.
AquaticEngineer
WOW that IS bright. Sheesh. Are there optics for that size of LED? Yeah they do, this is the one I'm going to try out. 60 DEGREE OPTIC ON EBAY FOR $12 SHIPPED

EricsNano
So being the completely clueless person I am, How many of these would I need over a 27 gallon hex? I know the hexes are deep, but I don't know how the penetration of this would be...
AquaticEngineer
So being the completely clueless person I am' date=' How many of these would I need over a 27 gallon hex? I know the hexes are deep, but I don't know how the penetration of this would be...[/quote'] This 50w LED is essentially the exact same thing that Ecoxotic is using in their 50w LED cannon fixtures. Here's the link to the thread with a video of them over a giant tank at Legoland. http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?25163-Legoland-aquarium-LED-retrofit&highlight=LegoLand Only difference in my light and their light is the kelvin rating. Mine is 6500k theirs is 12000k. They sell 12k LED bulbs on ebay for about $50ish, I just didnt want to spend that much on a test light. Also, Ecoxotic doesn't utilize a fan on their lights because the majority of the fixture is made out of solid aluminum and acts as a very large heatsink. EricsNano
Interesting. So of the 12k, I bet one might be enough to go over a tall hex, like a 27... Softies on the bottom with whatever I want up top, huh?
AquaticEngineer
I'd imagine with one of these lights you could grow SPS on the sand bed down to 30", lol. I will know better for sure in a day or two though what the par rating is at different depths. My friend that helped fund this experiment is getting a PAR meter so we can check this out and do a side by side par rating against a 250W halide he has setup. It'll also help quite a bit once I get the optics over it to concentrate the light.
EricsNano
Based on that video, I'd say a 50watt one of these may be way too much. WOW.
AquaticEngineer
The whole reason I looked into these was because I needed a light that would penetrate down into a 48" deep tank and not put off too much heat like a halide does. Also the cost savings in lighting is nice
jackaninny
I'd be worried about the 6000-6500K part
AquaticEngineer
Based on that video' date=' I'd say a 50watt one of these may be way too much. WOW.[/quote'] They also make these lights in 10w 20w 30w and 100w as well as the 50w. The down side to these is that there is not a lot of optic choices.....yet.....and you would still want to supplement with dimmable blue LEDS to get the right visable color spectrum, if you care about that kinda thing
AquaticEngineer
I'd be worried about the 6000-6500K part Thats just for this one as a test bulb to see if I can get the same penetration as a halide. They sell 12K and 20K versions of these LEDs for around $50 shipped. You could also just add blue T-5's or LED's to supplement the color unless you wanted to run a single fixture in which case I would just go to a 12k or 20k. EricsNano
I bet a 30 watt 20k would look pretty stellar over a hex. heh heh heh... Can't wait to see how your tests turn out!
AquaticEngineer
Thought I would share the LED lens and reflector I'm going to use on my 50w setup. Its a 60 degree angle lens and reflector shipped for under $6. I still need to find an adequate housing for everything, but it will probably be an aluminum tube or something unless we just keep it as a retro fit. http://cgi.ebay.com/10W-20W-100W-LED-Lens-Reflector-Collimator-50mm-Base-/360357692501?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e6fe0455&autorefresh=true
