Mandinga
Tank is without power. A transformer exploded and caught fire in newberg this am...tank has been without power since 6:45am. Current temp 74.2 has gone down 1 degree. How long do I have? I am trying to find a generator as this could be some serious time. Insight? Suggestions? markvo
I think a generator is your best bet. Maybe home depot will rent you one. I don't have anything that will help.
lewisriverfisherman
I have been without power for about 5 hours before. No circulation or anything. I didn't seem to lose anything. I have heard to use a pitcher to pour water in you tank to increase the oxygen.
Bigjohnwoody
Make sure you have circulation as well! I am sure you know this. The water really needs to stay oxygenated also if you have a ups battery backup for your computer that will buy you a little time depending on the size of it. Also you could get a power invertor for your car and plug an extension cord and run some stuff off of that. Just make sure to keep your car running so you don't drain your battery
Mandinga
Well, I covered tank, tank temp now 74. Found a generator at a friends, he's about an hour away. Thanks for the tips, and experience. I'm not worried about oxygen as I have a battery air pump...worried more about temp...
Bigjohnwoody
Power inverter and ups could both be used to plug heaters into. Glad to hear you got the generator. You are making me think I need a generator. I have a ups and vortech battery backup but I don't think my ups would run my heaters long. That's what I would be scared of as well. My heaters are on a lot.

Mandinga
Got generator running. Man I hope the neighbors weren't enjoying their peace and quiet, away from electricity. Whatever!!! Mandinga
Power back on. Just as I get generator plugged into tank. Oh the irony. Has anyone ever used one of these battery air pumps before? Just wondering because my skimmer is going crazy making soapy type bubbles. Gill
I know one of the LFS let his tanks get down to 40 degrees for almost a week!!! He did not loose any fish. He did loose most of his inverts, but just saying this stuff is hardier then we give it credit for.
J.R
40 for a week? thats just crazy. My brothers tank crashed 2 weeks ago. He was in the middle of moving and saved his tank for last. Since they were not living in the house any more he had the heat shut off in the house and thats when his heater went out. He didnt know exactly when the heater failed but it couldnt have been more than two days. When he found out it was 50 in his house and I think he said his tank was at 58. He lost everything except a plate coral. Poor kid, I had a hard time convincing him to stay in the hobby after that but he started cycling his tank a few days ago. newfisher
I had 4 air pumps going for 12 hours and no probs with skimmer. Mabey shut it off, clean it and restart?
Mandinga
Well, skimmer quieted down finally. No losses. Thank God. 40 for a week? No way, everything would be dead. I'm not saying you were lying, but the shop musta been exxagerating. Two things cause rapid cell decay in Saltwater fish/coral...temp and pH. Maybe a few hours, a day at most... Emerald525
I'm glad it worked out for you Isaac. That's why Beth and I got a generator but unfortunately it doesn't work and Newfisher is going to fix it for us. We figure a generator is a small price to pay. I agree we have had most coral loss with a drop in temp and too high of a temp.
