ClayTheSavageFraser
....if I put 400 watt double ended bulbs in a 48" maristar combo fixture and run them with a 400 watt dual ballast? Clay
ClayTheSavageFraser
What if I put 3 250w mhs on a 240 gallon tank? Would that be enough lighting? I would like to do VHO supplements too! This Will be my first canopy, and I dont really know what to do?
stylaster
well as am example i have a 120g tank and i run two 250w 20k and one 400w 14k and i still wish i had a bit more light. So a tank that size i would go atleast three 400w halides. How long is the tank?
ClayTheSavageFraser
72"!! um, shoots!! what about 10 t5s and 2 250 de mhs? Clay
CA2OR
I think you are beyond the ranges of 250's at that point...might want to focus on the 400's.
ClayTheSavageFraser
Do you think I could put the de 400s in the 250 fixture with a 400 ballast?
CA2OR
well the fixture's aren't very much right? Why not just pick up 400w fixture to go with bulbs and ballast?
snowpunk
I would run at least 4 mh in a 240. then add a few VHO's too..
Rick
What is the tank depth? If it's close to 30" which is what it looks like then your going to need 400w lights to reach the bottom. With the length probably 3 of them. What do you have for 250w lights? I may be willing to swap my dual 400w Pendants with the PFO ballast for 3 250w lights. (I think I would rather downgrade a few watts to get 3 lights instead of 2 over my tank)
ClayTheSavageFraser
I have a maristar combo lighting system right now, that is crazy expensive! It has 2 t5s and 2 250 mh's I have a dual ballast 400w pushin it. I also have over my frag tank a single ended 250 with a 250w ballast pulse right. Rick
If the market wasn't so soft I would suggest selling the fixture and then retrofit 400's. A nice fixture "should" sell for more than the parts would cost to do it however I just don't know right now. (It took me a few weeks to sell the fixture I had and I took half of what I thought it should have sold for) I think I would get a couple of reflector/mogul setups and use the dual 400w ballast to run them instead. I don't think (not sure) the 400 DE bulbs will fit the 250w DE sockets. I don't think I would put a fixture under a canopy again. (Heat is harder to control)
Michael7979
I have a 240g that is 8' long. I run 4- 400w 20Ks on HQI ballasts along with 4- 4' VHO bulbs as actinics.
ClayTheSavageFraser
Dang! OK!! So hmmm, I wonder?
Rick
Dang! OK!! So hmmm' date=' I wonder?[/quote']How deep is the tank front to back? Rule of thumb is one MH light for 2 sq. ft. of surface area. Your tank is 6' long instead of 8'. Unless it's deeper than 30" front to back then 3 MH lights is probably what you will need and then a couple of VHO or something to supplement them in front and behind. nwcoralfarm
Careful Clay, I seen a friend of mine do this once and his whole house exploded! Just kidding:D
Lowman
I think the 400 watt DE bulb is quite a bit larger than the 250. so it probably wouldn't fit in the Maristar
ClayTheSavageFraser
Dang!! Well shoots!! Ok!! I need reflectors!! I have the moguls and ballast for 3, 400w single ended just need the reflectors! And VHO's I would like to get 3 six footers with a 660 ice cap ballast!! Or I might have a line on a t5 fixture that has 8 or 10 of em in it, but it's only 48" long! Do you think that would work? Clay
wanareef
So how deep is the tank? If it's 24" or less the 250w will work, but if it's deeper then the 400w will have to do. If you handy, you could diy lumenarcs cheap and just get a mogul or DE socket.
