I have a large hydnaphore ( No idea how to spell it ) that has been doing great for the 2 months that I have had it but, at the beggining of this week it stopped putting his "shag carpeting" out except in one spot that is seperate from the main colony but on the same rock. and this morning it has receded and is leaving bone colored bare rock behind. IS IT DIEING. if so why? could my XL torch coral be killing it? there is about 10"-12" between them. the only corals near him are mushrooms, kenyas, GSP, zoas, and clove polyps and they are the closest at about 5"
Whats your calcium level at? Hydnophoras are famous for being calcium leeches. And as for another coral killing it, thats funny LOL those things are some of the nastiest coral we can get our hands on and will kill just about anything put in the tank thats put too close to it.

Need to know these levels
Salinity
PH
Alkalinity
Temperature
Also when things start looking 'off' in my tank i do a 30% water change, usually brings things around. It could also have gotten a bacterial infection, you could try dipping it in iodine for 15 mins.... 1 gallon of saltwater to 1 drop of lugols iodine, or use Tropic Marin Pro Coral cure.... also iodine based.
All current as of 10am today I do a 6g water change every Sunday using Instant Ocean which will be tomorrow. My tank is a 72g bow front, 150lbs live rock, with 20g sump live rock and sand, CPR HOB 60g skimmer (in sump), 26w UV sterilizer. Currently and for the last two months I have been running 2x110w VHO on a workhorse 7 ballast. My other ballast went bad and two bulbs caught fire and I cant afford to replace it yet. but everything looked great till 5 days ago. Besides the Hydaphore (he's in the top 1/3rd of the tank) everything else still looks great.
Do you run any sort of phosphate remover like PhosBan or RowaPhos? How do you supplement calcium and alkalinity? Do you run activated carbon? Seems like if it just started then I think it has something to do with water chemistry. If not a GFO type phosphate remover then I would suspect an alkalinity issue.
when alk starts to drop I use reef builder/reef buffer (Seachem). I also add 1mg of kent calcium daily w/ kent iodine 10-12 drops daily. I do not use any phosphate remover, but do use RO/DI water for all WC and top offs. I do run a bag of carbon in the sump.
also there is a finger of the rock that has a colony of the hydnaphore on it seperate from the rest of the colony but on the same rock and that "finger" is doing good its got it tenticals "shag" out feeding with good color and no receeding its actually growing. two inches away the exact opposite. it seems to have stoped receeding but still looks bad.
Should I cut off the finger and move it away from the rest?
