filters

What is the best mechanical filter to put in my tank or sump? I have nothing right now that pulls large chunks out of my water column. Whenever I scrub my tank (especially the cyano in the overflow and sump) it just floats around until it gets stuck on my rocks or I suck it out during water changes. However, I don't want something that will just end up a nitrate factory.
Any suggestions?

I use a filter sock and change it out ~weekly

I have heard of these filter socks. Where do they go? I assume on the tube from the overflow to sump?

what about some kind of removable pad in-between the baffles?

Yeah, some people do that. I tried it but I didn't like how the pads dumped a fair bit of their payload during removal.
