View Full Version : frag party or par tee

Frag party on June 3rd at my school. The plan is to pay $50 each, ahead of time to me, and then meet at my school and frag up all the colonies that we purchase. I figure each person will walk away with large frags, (probably about 5 different ones) and each person would also get one chopped up colony. We would draw numbers for the order of picking the frags so that each person would be guaranteed of getting one top pick of a coral frag. I also think that we could bring in stuff of our own to throw into the pot. This could be decided as the frag party gets closer. I would want money paid to me (no IOU's). Checks sent to me by snail mail. I see this as a fun opportunity so I expect fun easy going people to be involved. PM me if you are interested. Reply to this site if you have any comments or general questions.

Jay and I are in! I look forward to learning some new fragging techniques. Anything that furthers my education of the hobby I give three thumbs up! Let us know when you want our admission fee (just one of us, I'll supervise!) and if you need any help getting the par tee rolling.

Sorry I have not responded sooner. School server decided to block this site for the last few days. Bummer. Travis and Joel thanks for the generous offer. I already have plans for the corals. I have done my homework way in advance. I will let you know if I plan on doing another in the near future. You two have done much to support the school tanks. My plan is to get some surprise stuff in. I believe it will be some stuff you would not normally see. I do not want paypal. I would prefer checks sent to my school address asap if possible. PM me for the address and if you have any additional questions. Thanks for the support of what I think should be a fun, nerdy thing to do on a Saturday.

Can you give us any guidance on what sorts of coral you're looking to get? Are they all going to need high-light? Is it all going to be acropora? I don't have metal halide in my tank and I'm wondering if this Par-tee would be worth it.

Are we talking SPS here, or LPS/Softies, too?

Mr S
05-14-2006, 07:44 PM
Only SPS. I figure Stacey will have zoo frags that will end up being a bonus swap and I am also hoping if people feel nutty and have frags we can also swap them. I figure as the day gets closer I will have more details. So far I have several people interested and have contacted me. Make sure you pm me if you are committing to the par tee.

Okay, school still thinks this site is evil so I can only access when I get home. This is what I have so far: SPS frags only. People will bring stuff to frag if they want. The more the better. If you have frag plugs or rubble bring them along. I will supply frag glue unless you are partial to something weird!!! Bring your own lunch and drinks. PM me what time you want to meet and I will go with the majority rule. Bring a good attitude (heh heh heh) Bring a camera so we can post pics although polyp extension will probably not happen after we hack on them for a while I would bet. Bring Baggies for your frags. I am sure I am forgetting something so chime in if you think of anything. These are the people committed so far. If you wish to be added or deleted please let me know. The cut off date will be soon. It may be as early as this Friday. The problem will be if they will ship over Memorial weekend so watch this post and please notify me. I don't want to be the bad guy and say you can't come because you did not notify me in time. Okay here is the list.

Party, party, party!!!!!

I told my "special friend" that I was going to go to a frag party. He was suprised and worried (maybe even jealous) until he got that it was corals (or fishy stuff as he calls it) instead of young hot guys. Hehe.

I am really excited for this event, and very happy that it is in my neighborhood. Does anyone know if the liquid calcium works enough to get by for a couple of months, or if I should get a calcium reactor prior to the party?

Susie(party) (fish) (clap)

Nyles
05-18-2006, 01:22 PM
You need to get a calcium tester, preferably Salifert. If these are going to be your first SPS you should be fine depending on what your doing now, I just dose the usuall kalk and I have liquid ca on hand but I never need it due to I don't have enough SPS yet that leech my ca levels below what Kalk makes up.

Get a ca tester and keep an eye, if dosing kalk and liquid ca wont keep up then you need ca reactor, unless you got the money, but you will probably overdose.

impur
05-18-2006, 01:49 PM
I dose kalk and use Seachem calcium blocks. They dissolve as the tank needs calcium, keeps it pretty stable at 400ppm. You also need to test alk. For me, alk must be dosed daily even while dosing kalk 24/7.

Ideally, a 2-part additive would work best for you, especially if these will be your first few SPS corals. I've used B-Ionic and had great results.

I'll bring a couple extra props that i have. They won't move the same amount of water because they are smaller, but you can always change the prop later.

I'm going to pickup some grey PVC tonight and make a dozen shrouds or so. I also have the carbon fiber rod. So all we need is ppl to bring their MJs and some extra superglue if you have it!!

Ladiebuggy
05-31-2006, 10:10 AM
OK, please forgive me for asking a stupid question, but what are MJ's. I want to build, so what do I need to bring to do so? For the potluck, I was thinking of bringing some lasagna or cheese filled shells with marinara sauce. When it was stated to bring clippers, would pruners for plants work? What type of glue is used? And finally, does the rocks/rubble need to be dry?

Susie

Nyles
05-31-2006, 10:14 AM
your more than welcome to use my clippers, as far as glue some superglue "GEL" is fine, wet rubble is fine for gel. I have aquapoxy but its better for rockwork and such.

The frag par-tay... outstanding! Well worth the drive from Creswell to Albany! Absolutely incredible specimens! I'm not a big colored stick fan, but DANG! We had some b-e-a-utiful colonies to split amongst ourselves! Not to mention I had a great time with those who showed up for "Frag Fest I".

Now, onto some pics!

Here's our gracious hostess... er, host... Roger! He insisted that no one was allowed to get sneak peaks at the colonies until it was time for the par-tay to get rollin'. It's a wonder he still has all of his limbs as eager as we all were to see the pretties!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/spayne377/Misc/DSC04636.jpg

Roger devised a very technical plan for dividing the frags fairly amongst everyone. Let fate decide and pick a chip! Greg rolls the dice!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/spayne377/Misc/DSC04638.jpg

Bob! You're number one! The fates shined down upon Bob as he was the first to pick his frag. And what a frag it was!

And where the magic happens... the equipment we all know and love! Okay, I don't love the equipment aspect of the hobby, but it does simplify things somewhat. Wait, simplify isn't the right word here. This hobby isn't simple! laugh

So whats it gunna take to get Mr.S to open the doors and do this again? LOL... I had a good time and always a pleasure to meet more people in the hobby, thanks to those who showed and look forward to meeting everyone again soon. If this keeps up I may need a calcium reactor sooner than I thought.
