View Full Version : Hardy acro?

I have avoided acros because of the difficulty many have keeping them alive. I have been tempted lately to give one a try, in particular the ORA Red Planet. I guess my question is wether or not the Red Planet is hardy/more hardy than other acros? Any personal experience would be great, thanks in advance. :)

Red planet has been a hardy coral for me in the past. It keeps it's colors especially the green base in lower light, but will also grow well under high light with a lighter color.

Red planet is basically a fancy mille. Millepora is one of the easier kinds of acropora, so I would say it should be fine. Just remember that it is tabling, so it needs high flow.

I had an alk drip glitch in my system a month ago and have lost 4 acro's now. My red planet looks better than ever so I would consider it hardy for sure. IMO

Millies in general are pretty hardy as well as some birdsnests-With acros its more about stability than anything (granted higher light is usually part of the equation) some are kjust more demanding than others but key is stability-Akalinty being most important and then calcium.
Did I mention stability-(laugh)
Good luck!

Is red planet like milli? Does it has long hairy polyps or is it just like red green slimer (pardon my descriptions but you all know what I mean)

I was wondering that myself. Maybe pantherguy30 will chime in, these are his pics.

It looks like bali tri-color or some other kind of tri-color, I could be wrong though.

i have red planet, I get long fuzzy polyp extension on mine. I think it is either a. millepora or a. prostrata

Shows how much I know about colored sticks LOL :)

Did it survive your crash?

Since I feed at night the polyps don't come way out until the lights go off. That thing looks like a big fuzzy bush at night!! All my other Millis stay furry all day. So It makes it a lil different from any other milli I personally have.

you will be happy with it as your first but it will not be your last lol

I would be interested in a frag of that tricolor if it wouldn't be too much trouble

yep the red planet survived the crash, as did the other ORA branded corals. They seem to be pretty tough

I had the same experience when I moved my tank. None of the ORA branded sps died.

Awsome!!! I'm not sure if you caught my other thread titled "Noooo" but I put this little guy through hell when I removed it from the frag plug; today he looks happy though :)

Red planet, and purple stylophora for me

I just googled the purple stylophora, that thing is sweet!!! It reminds me of a coral Steve has, he called it cats paw I think?

cats paw is the common name for it. Pretty cool coral. I have seen stylophoras come in pink, blue, green, and purple

So would you consider the pink cats paw to be a good choice for an SPS noob? I really like the green birdsnest too and there seems to be a pretty strong concensus that its a good one to start on.

My pink cats paw is very hardy and a fairly fast grower. The only issue I have is it doesn't color up properly unless my water parameters are ideal. It browns out quicker than my other corals, but that gives me a good indication of my tank condition though. :)

i would say a good starter sps is montipora digitata, they are really tough. Stylophoras can be a bit touchy

Forgot about those. I have some growing in my sump under the light! Extremely fast grower.
