NEXT TRIP INFO:
Sunday July 3rd:
Oceanside, OR
Low tide: 8:49 AM -1.3
Sunrise: 5:32 AM
So it would probably be the same sort of deal as the last few trips. Gotta get out of town by 4 am to get there at sunrise and then we'd have about 3 solid hours of outgoing tides.
The Rally point for the meeting in the morning on Sunday July 3rd will be the Safeway parking lot off of 185th
There is a gas station, Jack in the Box and a Sharis there in case we want to get anything before we leave.
Address for Safeway is:
2177 Northwest 185th., Hillsboro, OR
From there we can all carpool in my Jeep or with whoever has room and wants to drive. I have room for me plus 3, and a trailer to haul any gear you want to bring.
All you need to do is contribute on gas to whoever you ride with so it all evens out for everyone :D
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought I would throw out this idea for anyone who may in the future want to go with me when I go tidepool collecting.
I figure we all have access to the tide tables and know when good times to go would be, so I'll work on posting up times of minus tides and locations of where I'll be going and when. That way there will be multiple times so it can work around peoples lives and schedules.
So if you want to plan to come with me and share on gas, or are thinking about starting a coldwater tank just post up in here and get it going :D
I may be interested just for the heck of it, and maybe help you stock your tank. I dont have a temperate tank but i'm kinda like a giant 8 year old when it comes to catching critters lol. I think my 7 year old would like it too.
You almost have me tempted to tear my reef apart and turn it into a coldwater system.

See thats the kinda think I was hoping for. I'm the same way when it comes to the tide pools and I just want to have people that are equally excited when I find something cool. You can only legally take 10 things per person, per day. So with more people going we can make the most out of the minus tides during our trips :D

Muuuuuuhhaahahhah, come over to the Dark Side (devil) Its nice and cool this time of year.

If you would just give me that lobster tank you are selling I would go with you. I would even drive, pay for gas and buy lunch....ahahahahah.
After going to the aquarium this month I am Seriously considering adding a cold water system to my home.

I'd go. I like to try out different temperate macros, which nearly always fail but something always takes, and I miss my sea gooseberries (:. Also need a bunch of tiny snail shells for an experiment, and some time on the beach. Kinda hoping to not do this til after this spell of nasty inclement weather passes, if that ever happens!

I have a ton of snail shells, they aren't really "tiny" though. If you want em they are yours, my starfish go through about a 1 lb a month. I think they are about an inch around each.

Wanted to give a heads up to anyone wanting to go tide pooling.
I have 1 more seat available in my Jeep for the my collecting trip on the Wednesday April 20th. We will be leaving the Portland area around 5am so that we can be near Oceanside by about 7am. Low point for the tide that day is at 9:15 so we should have a good solid 2hrs of the outgoing lowest tides to collect in.
AquaticEngineer

Looks like the next tidepool excursion will be Sunday June 5th.
We will be going to the same spot as last time on exposed rocks near Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanside.
There is a low tide of -1.0 at 9:52 am.
Sunrise is at 5:28 AM.
Drunkreefer and myself are planning on leaving town again around 4 am so that we can be there at sunrise and make the most of the outgoing tide until 9:52 am.
If anyone is interested in hitching a ride to go with us, or meeting us there, let me know :D

Does anyone know where to get a cast net, or a throw net, or if you have either of those let me know. I want to try and get some free swimming fish for my tank to go with the rock sculpins I have right now who stay near the bottom. The tank needs more movement.
I think I'm going to go pick up one of those fine mesh trout nets also since my dip net didn't hold up quite so well last time.

Hey guys, I think I'm going to bring my trailer with me to haul all the gear in this time. We were getting pretty tight on space last time with just 3 guys. This way we can throw all the wet stuff back there also and we can keep just the livestock in the coolers and buckets with the air running to them in the rear hatch.
Also provides more room for coolers with beer if needed ;)

That first round tidepool is sick!!! It musta had some goodies in it!! What else did you get? Yeah we forgot to take pics last time when it was like 15-20ft deep, but a lot of sand has been pushed in and it filled up quite a bit. Still like 10 feet deep though. Only place we found purple urchins on the whole trip.
Sweet that was a fun trip!!! How did the other creatures we collected fair. Ie the Surf smelt?
Surf smelt went to Josh's tank and its doing great. He did lose one small green sculpin into the skimmer and it got chewed by the pump, lol.
I moved all my ochre stars into the other tank so that I could put more tube worms into the dislpay and not have them get eaten.
Josh took home a bunch of the green anemones we had at my house yesterday so his tank should be looking baller right now.
But everything else we brought back so far is alive as far as I can see.
What all did we bring back?
Aggregating anemones
Some really cool red algae with feather type leaves.
Limpets
Lined Chitons
Mossy Chitons
hermit crabs
some small 6 legged stars (gray and pink mostly)
tube worms
orange hydroids
Several colors of sculpins (Green, Coralline pink spotted, brown/red)
2 very small clingfish ( one red, one yellow)
a 3" cling fish that is yellow with very tiny red dots
porcelin crabs
Red kelp crab
a coupling small sand burrowing crabs that are white with crazy lines on the shell
I grabbed some orange sponge and a few chunks of some strange encrusting stoney coral.
what else?

I wanna hear this story
So about 5:30 am we are rolling into Tillamook, we hit the speed trap that goes from 55 to 40 to 30 to 25 in about a 1/4 mile. I get on the brakes, but apparently not quick enough.
Red and blues come on, I pull over and put my keys on the dash, up comes this officer with gray hair and a gray mustache carrying a WWII issued 1911.
He tells me I was clocked doing 56 and 49 in a 30mph zone.
Well he hmmmed and hawwwed for a good 3 minutes before asking for my license.
Keep in mind he's staring at these 4 guys at 5:30 in the morning with a bunch of empty Rock Stars, Red Bulls, and packs of smokes laying around the car.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg100/Stuwobbe/Coldwater%20tanks/IMG_20110605_083224.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg100/Stuwobbe/Coldwater%20tanks/IMG_20110605_105623.jpg
So he talks and talks, and after a lot of "Yes Officer" and "You are correct Officer" he tells me he's going to give me a $200 gift today. At this point we had no idea if he was letting us go, or giving me a ticket.
Then he tells us " I'm gonna let you boys go today because I don't feel like taking on all four of you. But you 3 ( he points to everyone else but me) better keep an eye one this one ( he puts his finger right in my chest) because he aint quite right today"
At that point he lets us go and we proceeded to be absolutely dumb founded by what just happened.(laugh)
My ridiculous string of good luck continued throughout the day, as I blindly netted through kelp several different times in the tide pools and pulled up a yellow Clingfish w/red spots one time, and a 12" Kelp Greenling on another swipe. :D

Mind you he netted the kelp greenling like 1 min after I was netting in the same spot. And like 5 seconds after he said we scared everthing lets try another spot. And whamo here come a large fish in a net.

Dont do it in the 75 gallon glass, you will regret it. It will sweat like a mofo, and your chiller will run non stop.
Get yourself something customer built from at least 3/4" or 1" acrylic. I got a projuect tank in the works that may be exactly what your looking for ;) Keep in touch and I'll let you know the final price.
Next trip will be scheduled as soon as another low tide corresponds with a sunday. Seems like that is the only time we can get everyone together early enough to make it worth while.
The next good low tide is on the 4th of July weekend, so driving to the beach we decided may not be the best day. It still may happen though depending on the amount of interest, and who can go.

I dont have ac yet but I plan on figuring something out before summer gets too hot.It wsill be in the living room along with my reef, which I will be upgrading to around a 290g soon.
I'm thinking IU would like some type of cube setup, not too large, maybe in the mid 40gallon range.
Do you guys have pictures of your wet dfry setups. Are you using something like bio balls or?
I'd be down to go along and im pretty much free most of the summer.

We'll be there around 5:30 am and take the tunnel through to the other side if the tide is too high still when we get there.
That should give us a good 3 hours of outgoing tide before it minus' out at -1.3 around 8:49 am.
After that we'll gather up everything, sort through what we want to take home, and then probably go check out a couple spots I have been wanting to see that are further up from there.

Lol, no secret :D Its the same guy that filmed my tank.
His name is Boyd, he actually brought up the idea of filming one of these trips awhile back. He's doing it mostly for fun, but I may use some of his footage evetually. He has some really cool equipment, stuff like pole cams, and the waterproof go-pro cameras. He wants to shoot some really close up stuff with macro lenses in the tidepools also.

I plan on bringing mask and snorkle as I finally found mine. I will be searching for that darn surf smelt that got away... I wont be out your way tonight. But will give you a ring for sure. I am gonna make some buckets with large holes in them(with screens over them) so there is flow but nothing gets out. I will also be working on the "slup guns" for us to try and suck things up with. I am excited for another trip...

So how was the trip? Sorry I wasn't able to make it, was nursing a hangover. Had only eaten breakfast Sat. and thought is would be a good idea to do 7 shots of rum (Kracken) in about 10 min. was a great night but woke up thismorning feeling the aftermath!! I did make it out to the tidepools in Pacific City Sat morning though and it was so low!! Saw lots of new things!!! Found a clump of about 6 red tube worms/ fether duster type things, plus allot of sponges and such. Was very cool!!! I'm really wanting to set up a coldwater!!!!
AquaticEngineer
07-03-2011, 08:13 PM
It was freaking awesome :D
It was the lowest we have seen it out there this year, and there was a ton of sand that had been washed in with the high tides so we had a lot more mobility.
The filming was a lot of fun, and I think it'll turn out even better than I had imagined.
There was a ton of people down on the beach by the time we were packing up, and we kind of drew a crowd which was pretty cool :D
This will probably be the last trip we make until this fall when the tides get really low again.

So I loaded everything into the Jeep, pulled the trailer onto the side of the road and just kept going. Everything made it into the tanks alive, and my insurance is going to cover the cost of the tow truck that picked it up and brought it home for me.
What a day.

Holy cow the day ended in a weird way. To weird your wife caught us just as we were leaving. Glad I was able to get josh to his in laws. Glad insurance will cover the tow on the trailer. But I still had a lot of fun. Glad the film crew did not see everything go sideways lol...

Tiger Pods are breeding already :D
Got em seperated into 2 small acrylic tanks in the North facing window and another shallow tank growing out the algae.
I need a small brine net so I can start slimming the colonies out and feed em to the tanks.

That small white net of mine is supposed to be a brine net. You should still have it? You can use it if it works. I have no use for it...

We were going to go today, but decided not to. I had a bunch of stuff to do around the house, and the tide was only a -.7 that bottomed out around 6:30 am.
So we only would have had maybe an hour of daylight with the tide going out, and then a little while of it coming in.
I'm going to look at the tide tables and plan something a little further out that works better.
