Military Seizes Power in Fiji

Fiji's military commander said today that he had seized control of the country from the elected government, dismissed the prime minister and appointed an interim replacement. Commodore Frank Bainimarama told a news conference that he was using special powers under the constitution to assume the powers of the president and replace Premier Laisenia Qarase.

Its sad that countries in such fragile ecosystems always seem to have even more fragile governments

It was a little scary on our honeymoon in Fiji because of warning of another possible coup back in 2001. Got home days before 9/11 which pretty much overshadowed the whole thing.
