Looking to see if there is any interest for these mag-frags. http://aqua-mags.com/ darrellw showed his this morning in a thread and I really like them. I would like to keep this open at least until the 15th so that everyone has a chance to get in if they want. I emailed the company and got this response:

Thank you for expressing interest in our products. Our Group Buy info>> is as follows:>>>>
Frag-Mags $ 5.00 each>>
Rock-Mags $ 15.00 each>>
Rock-Mag Jr $ 7.50 each>>
Frag-Farm $ 3.00 each>>>>>>

Minimum buy is $ 200.00, FREE shipping to one location. You can keep it open untill you get to magic $ 200.00 number ;) Once you have your order together, just e-mail me the quantities and I'll send you one invoice via Paypal for the order. Once it's paid, your order ships FREE the next day.

I've never started one of these, (scary) so maybe someone can chime in here. I guess people would need to send money to my paypal and then I send it on? I can hold the money in paypal right and not have to transfer in and out of my checking? So I guess I'll just do a running tally of what people want in this first post and edit as we go. I guess I'll start it off w/ me.

Checking off in blue as they get delivered:

Sharoleb: 2 rock mag jrs and 3 frag mags $30.00 3 frag farms 3x3 $9
Nate: 2 Rock Mags and 1 jr rock mag, and 2 frag mags $47.50
Noobtosalt: Rock Mag $15
Haroldb: 2 rock mags $30 - arrangements made
Jadams7 rock mag and rock mag jr. $22.50
Gawf4fun: rock mag and rock mag jr. $22.50
PeteRock: Rock mag: $15
R-3 - 2 Rock mag jr. - $15

Current running total = $206.50

I'm in for 2 of the bigger ones. There $15 instead of $20 with the Group Buy correct? Just making sure. I think these are a great idea and will surely be a success.

Yes, that's correct. We get that discount if we can meet the $200 minimum.

Bump. So how exactly do these work? Like the rock is magnetic and the plugs stick to it? Because that would be a great idea. They recommend epoxy so I didn't know if that was the case or not.

Mike - I just read the page again. It looks like when they talk about epoxy they are saying you can glue your frags to the rock-mag, just like on live rock. It's the magnets inside that make them hold to the glass. I like them because I've always like the idea of having corals on the back wall, but regular frag plugs don't seem to stick well on the vertical surface - at least not for me.

Looks like some cool stuff. Maybe we should try to get one of the LFS's to carry their products.

Might have to get in on it.

I've glued frags directly on the back wall using super glue which worked well. But I hate epoxy so i'm curious if the plugs are magnetic and they stick to the rock without the use of epoxy. If it doesn't then i'm filing a patent.

Harold B
02-08-2011, 12:37 PM
I believe the frag plugs are.

sharoleb
02-08-2011, 12:41 PM
Yeah, I believe the frag plugs are magnetic on each side to stick to the wall of the tank.

Harold B
02-08-2011, 12:42 PM
I don't see why they wouldn't "stick" to the rock also.

sharoleb
02-08-2011, 08:17 PM

Trautman - you're added.

sharoleb
02-11-2011, 04:08 PM
Here is the answer to our question of whether the frag-mag can attach to the rock mags and jrs. Kinda cool they can customize them.

"The Frag-Mag will not attach magnetically toa Rock-Mag or Rock-Mag Jr. We could easily embed magnets throughout the Rock-Mag for this purpose, but it would drive the Rock-mag cost upconsiderably (Approximately $3.00 per embedded magnet as an additionto the Rock-mag cost). We are willing to make these on a special order bases. Feel free to contact us again if this interests some of your group buy participants."

Sweet where does that put us? Also who do we all make the payment to? Does it have to be paypal? If so i' need to make a transfer so it might not be ready till WED. sorry Maybe there will be another way to work out payment.

sharoleb

Current total is $191.50, I've just been updating the first post. Paypal will be to me, I'll PM everyone to give my email address. I think as long as I get a paypal confirmation on Tues then my checking account could cover any banking delays. PM me if you need to pay cash, I'm sure we can work something out.

Ok, I emailed them w/ our order totals. Here is the response I rec'd:

Thank you for the order. I just sent you a Paypal invoice. We have recently had an unusually large volume of orders and our Rock-Mag stock is low. Once payment is received I will be able to ship yourorder on Tuesday, February 22nd. Thanks again for your business.

I paid the paypal invoice. Bummer it won't be shipped for a week, but it's in motion now. I'll keep everyone updated if I hear more.

Just a quick question for those who bought these aquamags...Did anybody elses start to disintegrate in their tanks? I placed mine fairly high up on my 24" high side wall and yesterday while doing some routine maintenance, I bumped one of the two magnets and it fell off. As I tried to reattach it, I looked in the tank and saw that the frag rock had cracked in half and fell to the bottom of the tank (with my corals on it (flame)).

Naturally, I reached into the tank to recover it and it practically feel apart in my hands. The pieces just fell away from the body such that there's no way I'm putting it back into my tank. The other half still sits on the wall of my tank, but I'm going to pull it out tonight before it falls and lands on other corals.

So, has anybody else had this happen to them?

Thanks,

Mark

Interesting! I was considering emailing the company myself. Mine have crumbled a little, but are still whole. However, both of mine will no longer hold the corals. On one I put a $500 efflo, and on the other a nice tenius. Both corals are little mini colonies, nothing huge by any standards - yet they are now too heavy to be held up by the magnets. The rocks have to rest on other rockwork in order to not fall down. It looks dumb, and not at all what I envisioned. I actually took one out last night.

I contacted the company and described my problem, as I had in the post from earlier today, and received the following reply:

I am sorry to hear of this issue. We have had a issue with one batch of rocks we made last winter. Apparently they did not cure properly and a few customers like yourself experienced a similar problem. We did some analysis and discovered the problem that will prevent this in the future. Please be rest assured that the crumbling rocks will not hurt your reef or inhabitants at all. Please let me know what you ordered and we will replace them right away. I personally have not had this problem with any of the Rock-mags in both of my reef tanks, some rocks are now over 4 years old. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Best regards

Jim @ Aqua-mags

I would suggest that anybody else who has experienced this problem should get in touch as Jim appears to be very service oriented and seems to be very helpful.

His e-mail address is: supportaquamags@gmail.com

Yea mine will have little bumps fall off any time they are touched it seems. I have had a few larger chunks fall off as well without anything more than my hand moving them. The magnets are also really weak. We should all try to join up and contact to see if there is anything they can do for us, since we all bought at the same time and are having issues. Not that I am using mine in my display any more, but that is mainly because with black sand, having to pick out little white flecks of this rock all the time just is not worth it.
