Does it make a difference if you drip your effluent under water or let it drip into the tank? Ive been reading over at RC and have run across several people who say you really should drip it above water. So whats the deal?

If you drip above water it allows any residual co2 to escape into the air rather than being released in the water causing a ph drop in the aquarium.

That makes sense...my pH has been falling a bit. THanks

Ah ha, that makes sense. I used to have mine above the water, but now it is in the water. It does make a difference in your PH. I'll take it back out of the water and see how much it affects my PH. With it in the water I run from 8.05 to 8.20.

the other issue is that if the return is under water, creep can more quickly build up and cause a blockage, since the water can cause percipitation on contact with your sump water.
it should be on your weekly maintenance routine to check for that, and make sure to regularly soak the end of the tube in warm ro water to dissolve any deposits. this also holds true for kalk reactors.
also, if you are having ph drops, this will allow the use of a fan to more effectively evacuate the co2 from the stand.
