Ok, my pearly jawfish...They are one of my most favorite fish in this hobby. They have a ton of personality and are curious in nature but big scardy cats at heart...they usualy dig in the sand make burrows and work on it all day long, but this one was being bullied by the diamond goby, so he has taken residence up in one of my rocks and he seems happy. But he still has is personality. I have some photos and a video so you have see him in action...I am tryin to get the other video of feeding time so you can really see him, but photobucket is being wierd...I hope this all gives you an idea of how cool these guys are.

Nice fish, I have one as well, and really enjoy him. Their eyes remind me of cartoon characters, and often act like them also.

That is funny...I had one in my old nano, and he had a shell that he would cover up his main hole at night with it, like a door...it was awesome.

Does it ever come out? Seems pretty skiddish.

I catch mine out now and then, he comes out for feeding everyday. Normally though they stay at least 1/2 body in there homes but you can usually always see them. Other than when you first throw them in the tank. I didn't see mine for a month or two, then he was all over the place.

Yeah, he comes out to eat, and just hovers in his hole...but that is what is so fun about him, he just looks around and moves and just hangs out. He is really animated with everything he does.

how much sand do you really need to keep these little guys happy? I read online somewhere that you needed like a 6" sandbed but I dont want that much sand....I was thinking like 2-3". how much do you guys have?

I got a barnacle from the LFS about 1" opening and 2" deep burried it in the sandbed (mine is 3" deep) and he took right to it when he seen it. I recommend it 100%. The 3" sandbed just isnt quite enough, so any crevice you can burry in ther they will clean out and make a home with. At night he just covers the entry and sleeps, in the morning he opens the door. Fun to watch.

2-3" will be fine...but it will help if you give him alot of different sizes of things, curshed corals, small shells, etc. and put deeper sand in certian places he is starting to hang out by and in...Also a cool crevice will make them very happy, like stated above.

After reading this thread, I became interested in these fish. We ended up buying a pearly jawfish. We liked him so much that we also ended up buying this guy, a blue dot jawfish. Both are very cool and entertaining.

Are the 2 jawfish OK together? fighting? Is the tank big enough to give them their own territory.

They have been fine together. They are housed in a 240g. At this time, I have seen no aggression. One has a permanent burrow, the blu dot has been moving between a couple locations, with one being directly above the pearly.

How cute! Now I want a jawfish! How much substrate do they require? I only have about an inch.

He's so cute!! Nice pics :)
